11-Year-Old "Fun Home" Star Sydney Lucas Slays With "Ring of Keys" Live Tonys Performance

Fun Home, based on lesbian cartoonist Alison Bechdel's graphic novel memoir, cleaned up at the Tony Awards. The show won Best Musical along with Best Director for Sam Gold, Best Original Score for Lisa Tesori and Lisa Kron, and Best Actor in a Musical for Michael Cerveris.

The biggest oversight, however, was not awarding 11-year-old Sydney Lucas the Best Featured Actress in a Musical award for her stunning work.

Lucas plays "Small Alison," the youngest of three versions of Bechdel in the show. Her scenes are marked by growing resentment toward her closeted, control-freak father—difficult emotional beats for an 11-year-old—as well as a burgeoning realization about her sexuality.

In "Ring of Keys," arguably the show's anthem, Small Alison recognizes her attraction to women for the first time, albeit in an abstract manner. When she spots a butch delivery woman at a diner, she's overcome with a sense of familiarity and admiration that she just can't shake.

Brava to Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori—also winners on Sunday—for the fabulous lyrics and music, but this live performance at the Tonys Sunday night is all Sydney!

Let's hope she gets that Tony very soon!
