A 12-year-old Florida boy is in police custody after allegedly gunning down a transgender woman in downtown Orlando for no apparent reason.

The 26-year-old victim, identified as Cheyenne West and/or Shandebine Sherrington in conflicting reports, told WESH reporter Summer Knowles that the child approached her near the intersection of Church Street and Rio Grande Avenue late Thursday night and threatened her with homophobic slurs before opening fire.

“I was walking along Church Street, going towards a friend's house, when I was approached by a 12-year-old saying he was going to kill me," she told My News 13. "I don’t know who this individual was and he started shooting at me, chasing me multiple places to shoot at me.”

“He was just saying foul words," she added. “Thankfully I had witnesses that were out there and saw this young man shooting and chasing me down the street.”

West was thankfully not struck by any bullets and was able to dial 911 as she ran.

"What was going into my mind was if I catch him, I'm going to beat him. I think he ran out of bullets," she said.

Orlando police were able to immediately find the suspect, Joseph Smith, as well as his discarded gun and several shell casings in the area where West was chased. Smith was arrested without incident and charged with attempted murder and grand theft of a firearm.

WESH spoke with Smith's grandmother, Josephine Felder, who said she had no idea he left the house Thursday night, and that he must have crawled out of a window.

Felder also confirmed her grandson is currently taking medication for "mood swings or whatever you call it."
