14-Year-Old Girl Commited Suicide Rather Than Come Out To Parents

A 14-year-old British girl who died in September hung herself rather than come out to her parents, an official police inquest reported this week.

The body of Elisabeth "Lizzie" Lowe was discovered in Manchester's Fletcher Moss Park on September 10. Prior to her death, Lowe told friends she thought she might be a lesbian but was fearful of telling her Christian parents.

"[She] was finding it hard to connect with God—she thought she was lying to him," admitted one friend, who revealed Lizzie was prone to self-harm and suicidal thoughts.

But Lizzie's father, Kevin Lowe, said her fears about coming out were misplaced. "It wouldn’t have come as much surprise. She was very much a tomboy," a tearful Kevin told the inquest. "In fact, she was more of a boy than some of the boys were, so it would have been no surprise at all. We would have been very supportive."

Coroner Nigel Meadow, who ruled the death a suicide, said Lizzie was "clearly an intelligent young woman... but was going through issues of developing maturity and exploring her sexuality, and was struggling to come to terms with that against her faith beliefs."
