14-Year-Old Italian Teen Commits Suicide After Gay Bullying

romeAnother young man has taken his life after enduring anti-bullying: This time it was a 14-year-old in Rome, who killed himself early Friday morning. The unnamed boy cut his arms and groin, and then threw himself from a balcony.

Before his death, he wrote messages to his family apologizing for his sexuality:  ”I am a homosexual, no one understands my drama and I do not know how to make it acceptable to my family,” read one.

According to Pink News, "the Police Commissioner of Rome was said to have been unable to fight back tears when he appeared at the scene." Authorities found evidence of harassment, including text messages on his phone, but friends said they weren't aware there was anything wrong.

This is the second known gay-teen suicide in Rome since November 2012, when a 15-year-old boy hung himself. Italy is set to debate a bill that would criminalized homophobic discrimination. In May another Roman teen narrowly avoided dying when he jumped from a window at school after anti-gay bullying.

The same month, La Republica published a letter from a distraught gay teen on the verge of suicide: "‘I am gay, I am 17-years old and this letter is my last alternative to suicide in a troglodyte society; in a world that does not accept me even though I’m born that way," wrote Davide Tancredi.

Tancredi's plea prompted Italian MP Laura Boldrini,to invite him for a meeting and declare that "A country that considers itself civilised cannot afford to live without a law against ‘homophobia, an evil that drives many young people to take their own lives."
