Name: Alan Moore
Location: Glasgow, Scotland, UK
Profession: Fashion and Textile designer, head of ten30
Twitter Handle: @ten30FASHION
Alan Moore studied textiles at the prestigious Glasgow School of Art, and that gave him the foundation he needed to launch women’s wear label ten30 — and after only one year, he’s already receiving accolades. After his first collection was launched, ten30 received the Scottish Variety Award for for Best New Scottish Designer, followed swiftly by an invite to showcase at Dressed to Kilt during New York’s tartan week, as part of a new Scottish designer showcase. “I love print and embroidery, and hope to convey a feel of heritage through classic tailoring and styling,” explains Moore.
1. What are you wearing?
I’m having a casual day today, so wearing Cheap Monday dark skinny denims, grey and white stripped Fred Perry polo and a navy and white All Saints cardigan.
2. What do you do in a typical day?
Usually I get up and do some morning emailing, facebook/twitter, web analytic type work before I get ready. Im not one for Breakfast so usually just head off to my studio around 10am and have a cup of tea when I arrive. My day in the studio involves a lot of sampling, dying fabric, researching new ideas to inform the project im working on and constantly on twitter!
3. What book/movie/TV show are you really into right now?
A friend recently gave me The Road to read, so I’m starting to get into that, although my obsession with The Wire is getting in the way (nearly finished season 3)
4. What’s a trend you wish would die?
I think all trends will suit someone and if there is a trend that the person is happy with and it suits them, then go for it. What I can’t stand is people following trends even though it doesn’t suit them, I’d like that trend to die.
5. What do you order for brunch?
Eggs Benedict every time
6. Who should we follow on Twitter that we’re (probably) not?
Can I say you should follow ten30?
7. What song or band has most affected or influenced you?
I’m not any kind of music geek at all, although my work takes a lot of influence from the 50′s and 60′s so things like Elvis, Buddy Holly, Frankie Valli are all on my favorite playlists. I’m also really influenced by disco and European disco and I would have to attribute Dimitri from Paris for that, A Night At The Playboy Mansion really started that for me. Its not exactly 50s and 60′s but I think the style and aesthetic is similar, men in beautifully cut suits, women in cocktail dresses, immaculate hair and of course cocktail drinking.
8. What project are you obsessed with right now?
I’m working on a new range of accessories as well as moving studios. So I’m currently obsessed with DIY and silk dying.
9. What would be the title of your memoir?
I’m not much of a wordsmith, but I’d like to come up with something that reflected my love for fashion, partying and comic books
10. What’s your hangover cure?
Blueberries
11. What fictional character do you most identify with?
I’m a bit of a comic book geek, always have been, and my favorite character has always been Superman. To say Superman, would probably make me out to be slightly narcissistic, egotistic and a bit righteous. So, Superman.
12. What was the best vacation meal you’ve ever had?
It’s a tough call between a traditional roast pork feast I had in Latvia a few years ago whilst on vacation with art school friends or a night of tapas and cerveza with my dad in Barcelona for my 21st birthday.
13. What’s your favorite solo outing?
3 very different answers, getting tattooed is something I always do on my own, from researching to actually getting it done, I like to keep it to myself. Shopping for comics, none of my friends are into it so I go alone. There is a pub in Glasgow called The Scotia Bar (said to be the oldest pub in Glasgow) which is very secluded and dark and quiet, I like to go there sometimes and have a few drinks with a good book, there is no mobile reception and no one disturbs you.
14. What’s your favorite bar in another city?
I showcased at NYC’s Dressed to Kilt [showcasing Scottish designers] show last year and drank in some really great bars, on the night of the show we went to The Bunker Club (22 1/2 Ninth Ave 13th+14th) and it was one of the best nights of my life. The music was great and the drinks were flowing but above all, the company was fantastic. Although, I probably wouldn’t go again, in case it wasn’t as good.
15. What luxury do you think should be included in plane travel to make it more fun?
Bigger seats and internet access!
16. What’s your biggest vice?
I cant say no to a party!
17. What movie will you always watch to the end when it’s on TV?
If I start watching something, I generally always finish it. I never fall asleep watching films and if I turn it off before the end I cant sleep.
18. Who’s your Spirit Animal?
If I had to choose and animal I would say a lion. I always try and take over and lead the situation, more often than not I bite off more than I can chew and I’m not afraid to tell it like it is.
19. What do you think of this picture?
I don’t get it.
