19-Year-Old Gay City Councilman’s Grindr Pics Sent To City Hall In Attempt To Shame Him

"This is my personal life,” said Cross Coburn.

An openly gay councilman in Texas has been targeted by political enemies hoping to embarrass and discredit him with explicit photos from Grindr.

LONDON, ENGLAND - NOVEMBER 24: The "Grindr" app logo is seen amongst other dating apps on a mobile phone screen on November 24, 2016 in London, England. Following a number of deaths linked to the use of anonymous online dating apps, the police have warned users to be aware of the risks involved, following the growth in the scale of violence and sexual assaults linked to their use. On Monday, screenshots of Cross Coburn, a 19-year-old member of the Groves, Texas, city council, were mailed anonymously to City Hall and local media. Images showing Cross clothed and shirtless, were included, as was a text chat between him and another person, and photos of a penis. An accompanying note read, “Is this in any way proper behavior of a councilman to represent himself online or a ‘dating’ app? I felt the city council should be made aware of the situation.”

Groves Mayor Brad Bailey, who also received the packet, met with Coburn and his attorney, local police, and a representative of the city’s human resources office. Calling the photos "disturbing," the Republican mayor said they were "an issue."

“Personally I think it’s unbecoming of a public official, regardless of age,” he added.

Thankfully, Coburn is standing up to the pearl-clutching: “I felt like I was being harassed, being discriminated against because I’m a young gay man on City Council," he told KFDM. "That is my personal life and no one should know about it. I’m sorry if anyone took it the wrong way but it’s really nothing more complex than this is my personal life.”
