President's Day Buzz Bits: NJ Gay Unions, Past Pioneers & Shaved Pop Stars

220x300_washington220x300_lincoln
These are the gayest pics I could find of Washington and Lincoln. George is rocking some pastel interiors (and those tights! those shoes! that sassy pose!) and Abe is all like, "I have one thing to say... You better EMANCIPATE!"

Happy President's Day! I'm not officially working today, so how about a bit of info to get your patriotic juices flowing. Or something...

Here's a list of activities and topics that will keep you busy. (Think gay civil unions, remember gay pioneers who've passed, give props to our transgender comrades, and discuss--yes, still--Britney's hair.)

Celebrate American history by making it! You can be among the pioneers to get your legal gay civil unions on today in New Jersey. Today's the day it becomes official, making NJ the third state to permit civil unions. LGBT activists are happy, and despite the official public holiday today, county clerks offices in gay-populous towns like Asbury Park and Lambertville are open for couples to get licenses. You may now kiss your gay bride!

Barbara Gittings (left in 1968) was a passionate and kind beacon of activism for gay people everywhere.

The courageous and kind gay rights activist Barbara Gittings has died at age 75. Gittings was one of the pre-Stonewall pioneers who campaigned and protested publicly for equal rights for gay people back before there was even a movement. Give her props! And read more about her amazing life here and here. She will be greatly missed.

Or you can celebrate this American holiday by indulging in an Ameican pastime: Shopping. You can buy Britney's hair, for example, on eBay.

And just to fuel the silliness, here's how NYC's tabloidy daily papers handled the big bald Brit news yesterday. Ahhh, the media...

(More on Brit further down...)

Just FYI: Tim Hardaway, the NBA all-star who went on a public anti-gay rampage during a radio interview last week is still sorry about that. And Andy has some good coverage of how folks at the NBA All-Star Game felt about it all.

Amanda Lepore: A lightning rod--or just diversi-tatstic?

Folks got fussy when trans superstar Amanda Lepore appeared at a HRC gala dinner last week. But the NY Blade says, get over it! And I totally agree… (Plus, I love her.)

London was extra gay last night. Jake Shears and Pet Shop Boy Neil Tennant cranked out a duet medley at an AIDS benefit. Hurrah!

Congrats to super-blogger Andy Towle who posted his 5,000th post on Towleroad today. Sounds like he's got some big plans ahead, too.

Brit's not the only famous femme to join the no-hair club for women...

And back to Britney... The AfterEllen blog gives props to other ladies who've featured a shaved noggin in the past. Who says bald can't be beautiful, right?

My take on it all? I think Britney should just do a cover of this (complete with a big-head close-up video), it would go directly to number one and her career would be saved. Genius! Somebody should just hire me to be her manager, OK?

Britney: This could be you!

And just because it's fun to see Sinead O'Connor after such a long time... Here's a cute pic of her whooping it up with gay Irish boy-band star Stephen Gately in 2003. Happy President's Day, Sinead!
