Video Lunch: !!! - "Must Be the Moon"
In case you’re bummed your weekend’s over, or in case you’re still a little hung over from your weekend, how about a music video from a band made famous rockin’ the Cali and NYC all-night party scenes? (By the way, this video lunch is brought to you by the Logo NewNowNext video show. Check it out for this week’s select music videos!)
The freaky-fun “Must Be the Moon” is the latest from !!!. (That’s actually the name of the band, if you’re confused. The guys usually say it’s pronounced "Chk Chk Chk," but am I a total idiot for not being sure how to pronounce that either? Well, they also say any three identical, monosyllabic sounds will do - even "pow, pow pow"...Fair enough.) This video should definitely help you reminisce about drunk-fests gone by, but chances are the party you went to wasn’t quite like this.
More on the !!! gang after the jump...!!!
OMG!!!...!!! in NYC!
In the video, which is well-done and interesting considering it looks pretty low-budge, a crazy house party shifts toward scary cult rituals, complete with masks, war paint and implied animal sacrifices! There’s something kind of sexy about the whole package, though – or maybe it’s the babes all over lead-singer Nic Offer, with his no-shirt-under-a-big-fur-coat look.
And with lyrics like, “One drink, two drinks, three drinks, four - She had eyes I couldn’t ignore. I chatted her up on the dance floor - She was out of cigarettes, so I walked her to the store.” coupled with trance-y club beats and rap-ish verses, “Must Be the Moon” has got that party spirit, with a cool twist.
The single is from the band’s third album, Myth Takes, by Warp Records. It came out in March and showcases a solo effort from the eight-member band – they toured with the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s in 2006. Myth Takes captures !!!’s style of “African poly-rhythms, electro house bleeps and Philly soul,” but focuses on fun, club-style tracks. Check out their trippy album artwork here. I don’t really get it, but it’s pretty cool, huh?
The band also drew some non-musical attention when Nic Offer said the president could "suck his d***," so feel free to read about their political stances in this interview with Pitchfork.
