The Pipettes's New Album - Not Just Girly Girls
1960s girl group with a pinch of indie edge? These girls have the look and the sound.
The most effeminate straight boy I know seems to view a Pipettes show as an opportunity to meet his future wife. I guess he has a thing for polka dots, but then who doesn’t?
Their style is so old-school it seems like vaudeville – the girl pop singing more than reminiscent of the ‘60s and even synchronized dance moves. But of course it has its modernity too. The trio of RiotBecki, Gwenno and Rosay are all seemingly sex-positive feminists.
Plus stuck in between their harmonizing are some interesting musical flourishes a la indie rock and riot grrl. Not in the spotlight, but clearly there behind the three beauties onstage, is the all-male backing band, the Cassettes. Maybe that’s what attracts my friend: the dominant women and the subordinate men. Hmmm.
Anyhow, their new EP, Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me, is an excellent party starter. You can get everyone bopping and twisting in a not-so-innocent way. And if you live in the northwest, you can also catch them live tonight at Chop Suey in Seattle.
