Video Lunch: The Automatic Automatic - "Monster"

I like that this group of four former classmates’ album is called Not Accepted Anywhere. I wonder if that refers to their academics or to their music…

On their Web site, The Automatic (For some reason in the U.S. they’re being called The Automatic Automatic.) admit, “Faced with the choice of spending years getting drunk and in debt as students, or drunk and famous as rock stars, the four boys who would be The Automatic really only ever had one option.”

Wow. That really makes so much sense. The guys started their band (minus one member) way back when they were all just 12, and since then, they have developed their sound into what they describe as “electro-disco-metal-rock.”

It looks like these Welshies made a good choice to drop school, as the single “Monster” made it to Number 4 on the U.K. Singles Chart, and they’re now making their way to the U.S. as part of the Vans Warped Tour.

In the “Monster” video, the guys go on a good ol’ bogeyman hunt, singing, “What’s that comin’ over the hill? Is it a monster? Is it a monster?” (Apparently some soccer fans in Europe cheer this refrain at games, changing “monster” to “sister,” a custom the Automatics do not appreciate.) but it looks like the supernaturals get the best of the band.

The Loch Ness monster, Big Foot, a U.F.O. – they all play the hell out of the poor boys of the Automatic. Especially Big Foot...that victory dance is just cruel.
