Who’s Playing Where June 5th – June 7th: M. Ward, Fall Out Boy, Mary Timony
Coochie Pop no more. Mary Timony is the M. Timony.
I was into Helium before I was into lesbian movies.
Of course the two interests met in the 1997 film All Over Me. Mary Timony appeared in a cameo as the lead singer/guitarist of the fictional Coochie Pop, the band that, then pink-haired, Leisha Haley was in.
And while both interests have endured in their way, the more fulfilling of the two has been Mary Timony and her ever-interesting solo career. I can’t be the only one who’s compelled by her ability to write a song about a break-up followed by a song about a magical beast. And I’m always a sucker for rockers who can go beyond the guitar, bass, drum combo in a way that’s actually integrated and interesting.
Her new album The Shapes We Make just came out in May and, if you were so inclined, you could catch a show and feel like you touched a piece of indie-pop greatness.
