Girl in a Coma Finds 'Meat is Murder'

Jen, Nina and Phanie: Girls in a field.
It’s tempting to chuckle when you first click on the profile of an emerging band named Girl in a Coma that professes to adore the Smiths and urges you to renounce fur and meat. But upon listening, you realize, more quickly than you can proclaim, “The Queen is Dead!” that, just like Morrissey crooned on Girl in a Coma’s namesake song, “It’s really serious.”
Girl in a Coma may wear its heart on its record sleeve, but this PETA-petting punk rock trio from San Antonio, Texas, creates songs that sound refreshingly new and are singularly its own. Sisters Nina and Phanie Diaz and their best friend, out lesbian Jenn Alva, salute and reconfigure influences as varied as Joy Division, the Pixies, Billie Holiday, Patsy Cline and Tejano music on their debut album, Both Before I’m Gone, now available from Joan Jett’s Blackheart Records.
Get linked to Girl in a Coma's creepy-cool new video after the jump!
Formed in 2001, Girl in a Coma was discovered by Jett, and signed on the spot, last year while filming the pilot for a Si TV documentary series about up and coming Latino bands. The dykonic rocker was probably impressed by the range of the group's tunes, from the sexy swagger of “Say” to the rockabilly-accented “Their Cell.” But the exquisite voice of teenage Nina, whose husky adult pipes at times sound like the female incarnation of Moz himself, must have sealed the deal. This grrrl matches the emotive wattage of Sleater-Kinney’s Corinne Tucker, and she demands to be heard.
Catch some gender play and expressive vocals here in the hot video for Girl in a Coma’s yearning ditty, “Road to Home.” Watch Manhattan socialite Amanda Lepore, the self-described “number one transsexual in the world,” make a star appearance and help a young man find his true self. The gorgeously weird song could be at home on the soundtrack to a David Lynch film.
Strangeways, here they come. Girl in a Coma plays dates in the Midwest and the South this month, including a stint on the Vans Warped Tour.

god i love them

This band is amazing! Original songs and lyrics. Guitar riffs that complement melodramatic croon of Nina. On stage, this band delivers a performance that is to be envied by all other artists.
