Dream Concert Looks To Get MLK Memorial Underway!
Queen, Robin and Aretha will help get the party started (not to mention construction) for the MLK Memorial.
Planners for the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial have (very sadly) faced delay after delay in construction - but things are looking up!
The memorial project, headed by King's fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha, has come close to its $100 million minimum it needs before building can begin, and they're hopeful the upcoming Dream Concert will get them there.
The Dream Concert is set for Sept. 18 at New York's Radio City Music Hall; performers will include Aretha Franklin, Queen Latifah, Garth Brooks, Robin Thicke, Joss Stone and Stevie Wonder, to name a few.
The host committee's pretty impressive as well: Whoopi Goldberg, Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, Jamie Foxx...I'm thinking this concert will be more than big enough to get the project underway.
As of right now, the memorial's supposed to be done in 2008 (but probably won't be until more like 2009); it will be in D.C. between the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials.
