Video Lunch: Nelly Furtado - "Do It"
I’ve expressed my love of Timbaland many times, and Nelly Furtado’s Loose was such a fantastic album – so it’s hard for me to turn on them even though they may have plagiarized the latest single…
Well, in Timbaland’s words (and it’s true), everyone samples from everyone these days. Today’s featured video, “Do It,” is the fifth and last single from Nelly’s 2006 album, Loose. The track caused some controversy when a Finnish musician, Janne Suni a.k.a Tempest, claimed Timbaland (who co-wrote the track) stole the song from him.
The video’s a tad disjointed, no? Nelly looks great, but what’s with the lawn gnome?
More on Nelly, Timbaland and that little controversy...after the jump!
Nelly and Timbaland are a pretty hefty duo to go up against, Tempest...
So Loose is retiring after the “Do It” single, and I was a huge fan of its pretty-long run. Nelly described the album (she’s signed to Geffen) as having an ‘80s sound and an “after-midnight vibe,” which I totally agree with.
Earlier this year, Timbaland addressed the accusations of plagiarism when it came to “Do It,” and his excuses sound a little lame to me, as much as I love him. He claimed he had no time to research whether or not Tempest’s song, “Acidjazzed Evening,” was public domain. Later he added an ultra-cocky, “I'm 15 years deep. That's how you attack a king? You attack moi? Come on, man. You got to come correct. You the laughing stock.”
You can listen to the “Do It” remix on Nelly's MySpace, which features Missy Elliot. I think her interlude was exactly what the song needed – too bad Missy didn’t make the video!
