Video Lunch: Spoon - "The Underdog"
Least-catchy album title. Ever.
Sorry, sorry – Spoon is totally cool. But I was referring to their sixth studio album, called Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, that debuted at Number 10 on Billboard, their best opening yet.
And not that this really explains why they thought naming their album this would be a good idea, but the five Gas refer to the staccato sounds from their track, “The Ghost of You Lingers.” (I like that song, and its piano, but … where did Ga come from?)
Anyway, the anti-conformist “Underdog” video is very typical of Spoon; to quote Pitchfork, it’s “a Cliff's Notes encapsulation of Spoon's earnest compassion for the f*cked-over.”
More Spoooooooon!! after the jump...
Feelin' the album cover (if not the name) - especially the Samurai-style writing.
Spoon lead singer Britt Daniel and drummer Jim Eno formed Spoon in 1994 way down in Texas; (again with their weird name-choosing) they chose Spoon for their band after a song by the German band, Can.
The guys put out their debut album, Telephono, with Matador Records two years after getting together. They switched over to Elektra Records (which dropped them) in 1998 for A Series of Sneaks and, finally, to Merge for Gimme Fiction and Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga.
Ga Ga Ga…– god damn it – GGGGG attracted Spoon’s already-established Indie-rock fan base, but it also got a lot of online buzz for its experimental sound. Although the album’s only 36-minutes long, it definitely indicates Spoon is doing it right, even after 10 years.
