Get a My So-Called Life on DVD

“When I was little I, like, worshipped Halloween. And truthfully, part of me still does. 'Cause it's your one chance all year to be someone else.”
Like, who hasn’t missed 15-year-old Angela Chase since Claire Danes portrayed the character in My So-Called Life for a few fleeting months in the mid-90s? The highly influential ABC series presented teen angst realistically as it explored heavy issues like homophobia, homelessness and teenage alcoholism in scenarios refreshingly devoid of clear resolutions. Though as painfully short-lived as a prom season romance, the show launched the careers of out actor Wilson Cruz, who portrayed gay biracial teen, Rickie Vasquez, and Danes. The latter this month makes her Broadway debut in Pygmalion with I Am My Own Wife’s Jefferson Mays.
Now, anyone who could not get enough of Angela, Rickie, Rayanne and the rest of their fictitious Pittsburgh suburb, Three Rivers, can celebrate Halloween in the subtly troubled style of Liberty High School. Shout! Factory will release My So-Called Life: The Complete Series DVD on October 30.
The new release includes six discs featuring all 19 episodes of the series that aired from August 1994 to January 1995, and bonus material such as interviews, episode commentaries and archival footage. Also included is a 40-page color book with Janeane Garofalo among the contributors. If only the liberal comedian would reveal what it was like to work with lesbian theater dynamo, Cherry Jones, on the upcoming season of conservative-leaning television series, 24.
