Madonna Voted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; Beastie Boys Sabotaged?
What a whirlwind Thursday. The Golden Globe Award nominees have been announced. Nominee Jodie Foster continues to inch toward outing her private life. And American music legend Ike Turner has died.
What's Ike got to do with it, you ask? Well, he shares something in common with today’s fourth big chunk of entertainment news. Like Ike Turner had been in 1991, Madonna will officially be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame during a special ceremony in New York City on March 10.
As we learned last week, however, we should never ever dare to presume this timing offers any clues about her new album’s release date.
Joining the Material Girl as Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees in the performer category will be the tragically hip Canadian singer-songwriter, Leonard Cohen; 60s surf rock innovators, The Ventures; those Brit invaders, the Dave Clark Five; and good ol’ boy, John Mellencamp, who finally was inducted on the third try. What a charm.
A voting committee of more than 500 industry players selected the inductees from a list of 10 nominees. That prestigious roster had included the Beastie Boys, Donna Summer and Afrika Bambaataa, which led to speculation that this year’s inductees might reflect more recent dance and hip-hop trends in pop music.
But that hope fizzled. So go ahead and do the Watusi.
