Free Kitten Brings the Spring Noise

338025108_l_2

Aw, kittens!

Where music is concerned, just like in movies, it can be daunting to find supergroupings of older and wiser women. That's what makes it especially exciting to learn that, exactly two months from today, April showers are going to bring the rare, punked-out May flower of a new album from Free Kitten.

The band that sounds like an ASPCA slogan is a collaboration of some bona fide first ladies of indie and noise rock: guitarists and vocalists Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth and Julia Cafritz of Pussy Galore, and Boredoms' Yoshimi P-We on drums. Their first album in over ten years, Inherit will be released on May 20 on Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace label, complete with a talented boy toy. That is, Dinosaur Jr. frontman J. Mascis will join them in the guitar fireworks, now that the girls have ditched bassist Mark Ibold from some band called Pavement.

Claw into the history of Free Kitten after the jump!

Scarlett Johansson and Zooey Deschanel Sing

Scarlett_johansson_zooey_deschanel

-- scribegrrrl from AfterEllen.com

It doesn't always go well when actors decide to sing or singers decide to act — well, the latter is often just fine, but the former can be disastrous. (I've mentioned my Lisa Whelchel album before ... it's seriously awful!) But in the cases of Scarlett Johansson and Zooey Deschanel, the swapping of scripts for songs might turn out to be just fine.

Oops, I guess I've made it look like they're singing duets or something. No; these are separate albums. Too bad — they could have called their first release ScarZo Sings!

Style-Mates Pete Wentz and Christian Siriano! They Need a Walk-Off!

Pete_wentz_christian_siriano

A few people have reported Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz (straight) and Project Runway's Christian Siriano (gay) are lookin' ... kinda similar lately. I wonder who's faster with a flatiron...

While this point is undeniable, the two are alike in more ways than just fierce hair: Apparently both enjoy traipsing around their homes in womens' shoes. While shilling his girlfriend's, Ashlee Simpson, older sister's shoe line, Pete said...

"I love Jessica Simpson's stuff, especially the shoes. I dance around my house in them all the time."

Oh, I hope you're not just saying that, Pete-y! ...And do I need to remind anyone of Christian shooting down that whiny model? He's been walking around his apartment in those heels for weeks, girl!

"Will Gay for Oscar": Co-Star Thinks Daniel Craig Would Bend for the Gold

Daniel_craig_james_bond

-- snicks from AfterElton.com

Remember that rumor going around last year that Daniel Craig wanted a gay love scene in the next Bond movie? We covered it HERE (and check out the scintillating comments). Well, a former co-star of his is now saying that Daniel would be willing to do the scene, in exchange for an Academy Award.

Tamer Hassan, Daniel's co-star in the action drama Layer Cake, was recently quoted  in an interview, claiming, "That's Daniel dying for an Oscar. Ever since Brokeback Mountain everyone wants to have a gay scene to win an Oscar".

Cinematic Pairs: Partners or Lovers?

Desert_hearts_patricia_charbonneau

-- scribegrrrl from AfterEllen.com

Lately I've been thinking about lover Cindi on The L Word. Well, not Cindi herself, but the "lover" thing. It's hilarious every time Dawn Denbo says it, mostly because the word lover has gone out of favor. It used to be a common term in the gay community — or anywhere, really. Especially in the '70s.

But now lover has the connotation of "f--- buddy," while partner or girlfriend is generally the preferred term for the people you want to keep around for more than just sex. Or at least that's how it seems to me.

So what makes a partner, and what makes a lover? Armed with my trusty (and dusty) DVD collection, I have conducted a sort of survey. I don't suppose it's educational in any way, but it was fun.

1. Cay and Vivian (Patricia Charbonneau and Helen Shaver), Desert Hearts

I just had to begin with a tricky one, didn't I? Cay and Vivian definitely start out as lovers, but if Vivian had stayed, they might have become partners. Still, when I think of them, I don't think of fun times or tender touches or home improvement. I think of steamy sex and mind-bogglingly deep kisses.

Sean Hayes "Virile Enough" to Play Romantic Lead to Anne Hathaway?

Sean_hayes

-- Brian Juergens from AfterElton.com

In his Broadway Matinee column, Post writer Michael Riedel mentions that Burt Bacharach's musical romp Promises, Promises is heading to workshop for a possible return to Broadway. He then mentions that Will & Grace star Sean Hayes will be playing the romantic lead opposite Anne Hathaway, and questions whether Hayes is "virile" enough to pull off a role originated by Jerry Orbach, who could crush buildings with his bare thighs.
