Daily Buzz Bits: Ryan Phillippe's Gay Role; Kate Beckinsale Hates Sushi

Buzz_gay_celebrity_gossip

On Jay Leno, Ryan Phillippe talked about playing soaps' first gay teen and reluctantly watched an old jeans commercial in which he ran naked through an alley. - Towleroad

And Ryan will always be a skeeze in my book, but for the record, he's happy for Jake and Reese. Yeah ... for the record. Jerk. - USWeekly

"After years of awkward speculation," we now know R.E.M.'s other two members are straight. Thank you, Michael Stipe. - Queerty

Kate Beckinsale says she would rather eat vagina than sushi because "at least vagina would be warm." I'm guessing her publicist didn't hear that one prior... - Dlisted

Lauren Conrad is on a promo blitz for The Hills' Monday premiere: She made the Wall Street Journal, but doesn't have "the level of accomplishment" to be on the cover of Cosmo. That honor is for people like Hilary Duff. - Radar

I'm not sure if they're gay or not, but this Swedish Sound of Arrows group has got me! Listen to "Danger"; it's pure Swedish indie-pop heaven! - Pitchfork

Joan As Police Woman Nabs Rufus Wainwright for New Album

15sep06_006_2

Excuse me, Officer.

Fresh off an, um, arresting 2006 debut, Joan As Police Woman plans to release a follow up album, To Survive, on June 10. The infinitive-laden assembly of 10 songs includes the final track, “To America,” which is a duet with Rufus Wainwright.

Not that singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Joan Wasser, who leads the trio named for a 1970s television show starring Angie Dickinson, is any stranger to music heavyweights. Before she achieved serious acclaim herself, she worked and performed with the likes of Elton John, Tanya Donnelly, the Scissor Sisters and Antony and the Johnsons.

Detain a new song and Joan As Police Woman concert information after the jump!

Hilarity Clinton Video Blog - Ep. 20: Passion Week & Obama's Speech

Kate_clinton_lesbian_political_vide

-- Sarah Warn from AfterEllen.com

Kate discusses Passion Week, Obama's inspiring speech on race and religion, and why Hillary Clinton should make a similar speech about sexism. Plus, the delusion of crazy white preachers, and the War on Iraq.

Black Kids Video: "Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend to Dance With You"

Black_kids

Since the Black Kids made a name via loads of MySpace love-buzz, you know their debut, "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend to Dance with You" (watch the video via Pitchfork). But along with an actual record deal, the crew now has an official video - complete with lasers, neon animation and powdered wigs. Oh, and cheerleaders!

I don’t believe any of these five is gay, but still there’s that wonderfully-ambiguous line, "You are the girl I’ve been dreaming of ever since I was a little girl" from lead singer Reggie Youngblood (and what a name!). In addition, Reggie told Vice the Black Kids met in "culturally-bereft" Jacksonville, Fla. Sunday School and took advantage of loads of sexual repression to get laid. Makin' mama proud! What cool kids...

Gay Dance Divas for Lesbians

-- Malinda Lo from AfterEllen.com

Last week I got the new Kylie Minogue CD, X, in the mail. I get a lot of CDs in the mail from publicists who are promoting their artists to a gay audience, and it never fails to amaze me that most publicists have no idea that gay men and lesbians like totally different stuff (including sexual partners). But I gave the Kylie CD a spin anyway, because hey, I kinda liked her 2002 CD Fever.

Kylie_minogue_x_2 And I admit it: I enjoyed the new Kylie CD. In fact, as I was listening to it on the way to the grocery store, I thought, "Hey, I should make a mix of gay dance divas for lesbians!" Even though most lesbians are not into gay house music, I think there is some crossover, at least during Pride after-parties.

Here's my attempt at that mix. Some of the songs are tracks from bona fide gay icons like Kylie, others are more lesbianish. Some are brand new, some are old, some just have funny lyrics. All are divalicious.

Kim Kardashian Gays It up With Heatherette Boys!

Kim_kardashian_richie_rich

I'm not surprised these two are kindred spirits. Kim Kardashian, who, yes, I kind of love, attended the launch party of Heatherette's new make-up line at M.A.C Pro North Robertson in L.A. yesterday ... and apparently demoed some new product on designer Richie Rich himself! Who's having more fun here?

Kim has modeled for Heatherette in the past - so has Paris Hilton, Mya and Jenna Jameson, among many others - and it looks like the designers' work still gets her going. Keep it together, Kim!

More gayness after the jump!

What's Gay on Hulu?

Hulu

-- Dennis Ayers from AfterElton.com

Hulu.com officially launched last week, and for those who may not be aware, it is the online distribution channel developed as a joint partnership between NBC and FOX. The site contains clips and full episodes from television shows both old and new. Like YouTube, users can freely embed content from Hulu.com anywhere else on the web (the clips that follow are examples). Unlike YouTube, the site won't host any user-generated content, and each media clip has short advertisements at the beginning and/or the end.

In addition to material from FOX and NBC, Hulu also offers content from their many media partners such as Bravo, the Sci Fi Channel, FX, Sony, the USA Network, E!, and others. (Unfortunately, ABC, which among the major networks has the best LGBT track record, does not participate in Hulu.)

The Best Female Buddies on Film and TV

Gentlemen_prefer_blondes

-- browne from AfterEllen.com

It seems like every couple of years or so, someone will release another one of those lists: You know, the ones that talk about the greatest on-screen partnerships and duos. There will be a top ten: Hepburn and Tracy will be mentioned, as will Bogart and Bacall. In the realm of (allegedly) non-romantic pairings, there will be Paul Newman and Robert Redford as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and maybe Laurel and Hardy, or the guys from Lethal Weapon. What there reliably never will be is any female-female buddy relationships.

Well, I think that’s nonsense — so without any further ado, here is a list of my favorite (allegedly) non-romantic female partnerships on film and television:

Dorothy (Jane Russell) and Lorelei (Marilyn Monroe), Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953)

The '50s showgirls of this classic film travel together, trade banter, stick up for each other in the face of outsiders, and even walk up the aisle together at the end in matching wedding dresses. Sadly, they weren't actually marrying each other — even though the picture does make it look like it.

Atmosphere Video "Shoulda Known" - Bad Trip, Bad Breakup

I can't say I was a fan of Minnesota alt-rap/emo-hop group Atmosphere before now, but this new video is all kinds of nightmarish and mesmerizing ... gay too. "Shoulda Known" is from Atmosphere's upcoming album When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Sh*t Gold. Hmm...

Not that I speak from tons of experience or anything (I swear!), but this team does a great job of capturing the loss of perspective and sense of time, as well as the crippling anxiety, of a bad drug trip. The almost-nauseating intensity continues throughout the video, which follows the wordless breakup of two women.
