Katy Perry Longs to Be One of the Boys

Could Perry be your summer fling?

Not to read too much into the title of her forthcoming full-length album, One of the Boys, but the phrase does suggest why some girls who like girls might scratch their heads when they first hear music from Katy Perry. A cursory listen to two prominent tracks from this burgeoning pop diva reveals lyrics fit for gay boys, straight boys and girls who like boys. But the rest of us might have to dig a bit deeper.

Take for instance the song, "Ur So Gay," a Western-inflected groove that Perry performed last night on Last Call with Carson Daly. It outlines the travails of a woman whose boyfriend adopts too many fay habits, like vegetarianism and discriminating music taste, even though he doesn't like boys. Well worn metrosexual labels aside, the power of Perry's vocals and the eerie charm of this song's good, bad and ugly-like whistling noise inject some universal appeal into the track.

Perry, based in Los Angeles, also delivers a twenty-first century nod to Jill Sobule, or maybe not, with "I Kissed A Girl," the lead track from her new album. Except in contrast to Sobule's Gen-Xasperated acoustic realization that she might have found herself a new lesbian identity, Perry's synth rock song of the same title seems to celebrate today's more fluid take on sexuality. She sings, "I kissed a girl and I liked it. The taste of her cherry chapstick. I kissed a girl just to try it, I hope my boyfriend don't mind it."

Good for her.

Both songs appear on One of the Boys, which Capitol Records will release in June. The follow up to Perry's Ur So Gay EP from November, the album is produced by masters who have worked with Mika, No Doubt, Eurythmics, Kelly Clarkson, Robyn, and Pink, which accounts for the sound.

In the meantime, Perry has already been lauded as an up and comer by Yahoo and MSN, and she plans to spend the summer traveling with the Vans Warped Tour.

Better find something to like. It looks like Perry is going to be around for a while.
