New Coldplay Video: "Violet Hill"

It's time for new Coldplay. Specifically, its time for the video for the first single from the band's upcoming album, Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends. Wordy, much? (And... You might have noted it was downloaded by two million people during the recent one-week period in which the band made the song available to fans for free!)

Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" North American tour launches on June 29th in Philadelphia, PA. They'll also perform at the 2008 MTV Movie Awards. (And, psssst! You can see them for free in NYC on June 23rd if you're crafty!)

More on the new video (and the alternative version) after the jump!

About the clip and the song? I like the still, silent parts (sooo sweeping and landscape-y) at the start, and the first line of the song reminds me of the opening of Kenny Rogers' "The Gambler" -- "On a cold winter's night, on a train bound for nowhere..." Not sure why. Chris Martin and the kids are talking about a "a long and dark December" so maybe they're telling the same story? The video's big dry style also puts me in mind of Midnight Oil (Remember "Beds Are Burning"?).

Whatevs. The boys look good all tattered bopping around the scruffy Italian landscape, don't ya think? And I like that the sound's more earthbound and less fluttery than their usual stuff of theirs that ends up on car commercials. And you can go here to see a very topical alternative video of the song, featuring newsy footage of Tony Blair, George Bush and other powermongers. It's the "Dancing Politicians" version.
