Hot Summer Preview: Hot Mamas, Rock Bands & Sordid Lives
Summer is creeping up on us, so as Logo’s big fat Utterly Shameless Hot & Sexy Weekend looms, I’d take my turn today on forecasting what’s gonna be steamy this summer. My quickie list is entirely subjective, but such is life, right?
And when I say steamy, I really just mean what I’m gonna be salivating over, what I’m eager to see, hear and get giddy with. Get the goods on Julianne Moore, moody bands, party bands, pool parties and cute Spanish actors (like Unax Ugalde -- seen above) and more after the jump!
HOT MAMAS
Julianne Moore can do no wrong in my book. And while her new film, Savage Grace, isn’t exactly popcorn-selling summer-movie fare, it’s what I’m excited about. It’s a f*cked up story of a mother (Moore), her gay son, their lovers, a freaky (to put it mildly) Oedipal relationship, murder and crazy-rich Americans jet-setting and humping around Europe in the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s. The movie is made by Tom Kalin (remember the gay indie Swoon?) and it’s a twisted, gorgeous mess with another fearless turn by Moore. And it opens next week! No long waits!

Julianne Moore rocks amazing clothes and stalks around Europe, dragging down her dysfunctional family in her wake in "Savage Grace."
Savage Grace also boasts a turn by Spanish actor hottie Unax Ugalde as the gay bad-boy lover of Moore’s son, Tony. He’s tan, scruffy and strides around in leather pants. Yay!

Freckly Eddie Redmayne plays gay son Tony, and hottie Spaniard Unax Ugalde (right) plays his shady and uber-hot boyfriend Jake. Woo-hoo!

Here's another shot of Unax Ugalde. Let's hope we see much more of him to come, eh?
And Colin wrote about this yesterday, but I too am so inanely excited abut the film version of Mamma Mia! With Meryl Streep it’s just silly. The movie looks so unabashedly cheesy/corny I plan on loving it. It reads like a big unironic “High School Musical” for adults. What’s not to like?
Finally, Anne Hathaway isn’t really old enough to be considered a Hot Mama, but I do wanna see Get Smart! (out on June 20th). Watching her in that hot white trenchcoat is already doing it for me. And am hot for Steve Carell, so... Ka-ching!
A few nods to bands that I’m gonna love this summer.
Fleet Foxes – These five guys from Seattle are making moody and superbly melodic rock that’s dreamy, smart and perfect for a late afternoon nap in the grass. Kind of like Band of Horses meets Bonny Prince Billy in a misty meadow. And they have songs with names like “Mykonos” or “Blue Ridge Mountains” (where I’m from!) so how can you not like them! Their self-titled release is out on SubPop on June 3rd.

Seattle's Fleet Foxes -- nice rainy day tunes from a rainy town.
Black Kids – Their leadoff single “I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You” is a rollicking, stomping, splashy dance-fest, perfect for summer spasticness. They’re spending most of the summer bopping around Europe on a tour, with just one Stateside stop at Lollapalooza in Chicago on August 1. Plus, they’re from Jacksonville, FL. Props! Their debut, Partie Traumatic, drops on July 22nd here in the U.S.

Wired for stomping party sounds: Black Kids

Rolling Stone shows you the formula to the Black Kids' coolness.
Summery Concerts – Living in NYC you can kind of get spoiled with the concert options. You can hear shows in Central Park (like Kid Sister & Vampire Weekend – major!), in leafy Prospect Park in Park Slope (Feist! Outdoors! July 9th!) and in Williamsburg at the vast, empty McCarren Park Pool. Devo will rock the joint on June 26th. Yes, Devo (with special guest, Tom Tom Club!) It’s 1982 all over again!

Catch a show in Central Park. Or at Brooklyn's McCarren Park Pool. Outdoorsy!
HOT MESSES
I work for a TV network, but I rarely have enough time to watch stuff. But this summer, I’m pretty excited about the show Sordid Lives: The Series coming to Logo. (Sorry if that sounds like shameless company-boosting speak.)
Mainly, because the show looks like a scorching summertime punchbowl full of crazy complete with Tammy Wynette-obsessed drag queens, Olivia Newton-John, Rue McClanahan and the deliciously daffy Beth Grant (who you’ll totally know from Six Feet Under, Little Miss Sunshine and Donnie Darko—“I’m starting to doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion!”). It begins airing on Logo in July. Bless!!!
