Dueling Directors: Madonna vs Guy Ritchie

Madgenguy_2

Game on! Whose film will you watch?

How's this for marital tension? Madonna's directorial film debut, Filth and Wisdom, will premiere in the same month as her husband's film, RocknRolla! Just friendly competition between the pair? You decide.

Filth and Wisdom, out on the 17th of October, is about aspiring Londoners trying to make it in the city and all the filthy things they'll do on their way to achieving filthy wisdom (like sexually deviant acts for pay, or stripping, or robbing pills from your pharmacy job.) It stars yet another one of Madonna's discoveries, Eugene Hutz from gypsy-punk band Gogol Bordello. If you think you've never heard Gogol before, think again: They were responsible for the love-it-or-leave-it gypsy version of "La Isla Bonita" that Madonna performed for the Live Earth concert (and is currently re-hashing on her Sticky and Sweet tour).

Eugene

OK, so he's a little grungy. Nothing a shower can't fix!

I gotta say, Eugene Hutz was perfectly cast as the lead in the appropriately titled flick. Something about him is both dirty, yet oddly sexy. It helps that his character is sexually ambiguous and earns his keep by being a Master-for-hire.

Gerard Butler is yummy.

RocknRolla, meanwhile, is a gangster themed flick from the gangter-theme-loving Guy Ritchie, due October 31st. If you like fast-talkin', money-chasin', mob-avoidin', heist-plannin' Brits then this is the movie for you. And if you happen to like rough-n-rugged gay thieves who have crushes on Gerard Butler, so he tells Gerard Butler, and GB and said thug share a special night together just before thug is put away for five years in jail, then this film is especially for you. I was surprised at Ritchie's treatment of "the gays" in his film, given Christopher Ciccone's recent rants about Ritchie being homophobic.

Overall, both films don't disappoint, though they're not necessarily award contenders, either. The race is on, film lovers. Who'll come out on top?
