DJ/producer/party host/electro-magnate/shootist Spencer Product. His first compilation CD, "...Product," is out now.
If you've been out anywhere cool in the last eight or so years in New York City, then the name Spencer Product oughtta be a familiar one. He's the man who, along with legendary DJ Larry Tee, launched the whole Electroclash movement and the freaky/fashionable, influential/arty Williamsburg music scene back in 2001. The club Berliniamsburg played a big role in launching folks like the Scissor Sisters, Fischerspooner and Avenue D, and was a haven for nightlife style-mongers, music mavens and club kids. Justin Bond, Andy Bell, Naomi Campbell--freakin' anybody who was anybody in after-dark NYC trolled through its sweaty envirions.
And ever since, whether hosting club nights around NYC (he presently rocks the Lower East Side every Friday night with Ruff Club at the Annex), or helming gigs for fashion folks like Hedi Slimane or Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney or Anna Sui (or providing soundtracks for their runway shows), Product has been a hot man on the cusp of all things cool.
I went to his Soho apartment to chat him up about his new compilation CD, ...Product-- a buzzy mix of sounds from bands like Bloc Party, Cut Copy, Matt & Kim and A.R.E. Weapons, as well as up-and-comers you haven't heard of yet. We also chatted about parties, New York, fashion and TV. Spencer's super-nice, too. Check out the interview above!
How's this for marital tension? Madonna's directorial film debut, Filth and Wisdom, will premiere in the same month as her husband's film, RocknRolla! Just friendly competition between the pair? You decide.
Filth and Wisdom, out on the 17th of October, is about aspiring Londoners trying to make it in the city and all the filthy things they'll do on their way to achieving filthy wisdom (like sexually deviant acts for pay, or stripping, or robbing pills from your pharmacy job.) It stars yet another one of Madonna's discoveries, Eugene Hutz from gypsy-punk band Gogol Bordello. If you think you've never heard Gogol before, think again: They were responsible for the love-it-or-leave-it gypsy version of "La Isla Bonita" that Madonna performed for the Live Earth concert (and is currently re-hashing on her Sticky and Sweet tour).

Tim Gunn looks happy. And this Michael Bastian-clad hottie might be one reason why. Catch 'em both at "Fashion Forward" on November 10th in NYC.
Since the future of Project Runway seems iffy these days (will it be on Lifetime or what?), you might want to take advantage and get your fill of Tim Gunn -- everyone's favorite stylish fairy godfather -- whenever you can. If you're in NYC in November, why not rub elbows with him charitably at the swanky GMHC-benefitting Fashion Forward event on November 10th?
Watch the promo (above)! And after the jump, check out the pics of looks from some of the designers who'll be showing their wares. It's a who's-who of who's hot right now (Tim Hamilton, Charles Nolan, Michael Bastian, Ports 1961 by Tia Cibani), who's classically fun (Betsey Johnson) and who's just groovy/sharp (John Varvatos).
I have to confess to taking the will-she-choose-Gio-or-Henry cliffhanger on last season’s Ugly Betty finale fairly seriously. Once I became a full-on Betty fan, it was hard not to fully invest myself in such Betty quandaries, so I was doubly pleased by the Kelly Taylor pick-between-Brandon-and-Dylan redux in Thursday’s season premiere: Betty, head held typically high, chooses herself!
More exciting for the coming Ugly BettyMode-land guest stars that Ugly Betty features. Most recently, according to Entertainment Weekly’s Ausiello Files, Sarah Lafleur of ESPN’s Playmakers, is set to join the ranks of previous guest stars and cameos by Lindsay Lohan, Naomi Campbell, Christian Siriano and Nina Garcia.
Christina Aguilera Keeps Gettin' Better - And Keeps Looking Like Lady GaGa!
So we've all discussed Christina Aguilera resembling a Lady GaGa drag queen lately, right? (Sorry, Christina; I know that was rough.) You just know our girl GaGa was pissed off after the VMAs. There was a magnanimous quotation floating around in which GaGa says she does not think Christina copied her - but it's probs a fake.
Anyway, Christina Aguilera's first greatest hits album, Keeps Gettin' Better - A Decade of Hits, comes out (only in Targets) November 11. New tracks include "Dynamite," the title track and re-recordings of "Genie in a Bottle" and "Beautiful."
Speaking of "Keeps Gettin' Better" - which I'm not feeling, by the way - watch X-Tina's VMAs performance versus a GaGa show and see just how similar these two really are...
Gay gossip monger Michael Musto is reporting that Bravo has a new reality show in the works, one about gay men and their straight female friends. It's based on the book Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys, which was a collection of essays about the relationships between gay men and straight women (which included an essay from Musto himself).
There are no details yet about what kind of show this will be, but a bit of Googling reveals that one of the book's contributors, Karen Robinovitz, filmed a reality pilot for Bravo. However, further Googling reveals that show was a "reality version of Sex in the City" so that's probably a different pilot. Since so little is known so far, I thought it might be fun to speculate on the different ways such a show could turn out. Let's take it genre-by-genre:
-- by NNN guest writer & LOGOonline ad sales producer Eric Walter
What town but Minneapolis could host the world premiere of a musical adaptation of "Little House on the Prairie"? Minnesota is obsessed with the prairie, and Minneapolis loves its theater. (It boasts more theater seats per capita than any other city outside of Manhattan.) Michael Landon would be proud.
The musical is a conflation of the more notable events of the adolescence of Laura Ingalls Wilder taken from the series of Little House books she wrote. The Ingalls family is on the move again, this time out west to a tiny settlement in Dakota Territory, in search of a homesteader claim from Uncle Sam.
The show's overture begins with an Indian drumbeat, which introduces an American identity crisis that underlies everything about this show: These pioneers are essentially intruders on land that is not theirs. Do we praise them for their adventurous wanderlust — or do we despair over the spoiled prairie?
Heck, they're going to have to change the name to Gay's Anatomy if they keep this up. Aussie actress Melissa George is in final negotiations to star as the newest bisexual cast member on Grey's Anatomy. According to The Ausiello Files, George would play a new intern with an “open mind toward sexuality.”
The report also claims that George is “being groomed as a potential love interest for one of Grey's other two burgeoning bis, Callie (Sara Ramirez) or Erica (Brooke Smith).” Wait, what? Callica fans the world over are no doubt picking up the nearest heavy object and chucking it at their screens in protest.
Daily Buzz Bits: Lifetime's Not Getting Project Runway That Easily!
Heidi says, Suck it, Lifetime! Bravo/NBC won a preliminary injunction against Project Runway producer, The Weinstein Co., to stop the show’s switch from Bravo to Lifetime. Bad news, though: Season six will have to wait. - Gawker
James Franco looks wonderful on the cover of OUT, no surprise – and he dishes even more about intimate scenes with Sean Penn. - Towleroad
Whoops-y! Someone at CBS missed contestant Marcus’ boxer-brief “malfunction” on Survivor: Gabon. We bet Charlie’s not complaining, though! (A teensy-bit NSFW.) – Oh La La
Queer rock band Semi Precious Weapons will release debut, We Love You, tomorrow and will appear on Chelsea Lately. The album’s also available as a USB gun necklace – or as Justin Tranter calls it, “K*nty rock n’ roll jewelry.” Yikes! - SPW
Tina Fey was back on Saturday Night Live tonight with her
hilarious and eerily accurate portrayal of Republican VP nominee Sarah
Palin, re-enacting with Amy Poehler Palin's now-infamous
interview with CBS news anchor Katie Couric last week.
(If you missed Fey's first Palin imitation on SNL, watch it here):
Courtesy of Yahoo! Music, it's another one of those awkward in-studio numbers - and I only say awkwardbecause Yahoo! gives the artist minimal equipment and about two feet to work with ... so they occasionally go south. But I actually really liked this one from Keri Hilson (follow that link for the NNN.com interview with Keri!), mostly because Keri can actually sing. There are even some backup dancers in this one!
Yes, I have personal love for Keri Hilson (she's Timbaland's protege, if the name doesn't ring a bell), and I'm very relieved her In A Perfect World debut - for which "Energy" is the first single - got an official Dec. 9 release date. The video for the album's second single, "Return The Favor," is also in the works ... and I can attest that song is fantastic; Keri did promise the gays would love it!
Watch the Yahoo! interview with Keri - as well as the official "Energy" music video - after the jump...
If you managed to avoid slipping into a coma while watching the Emmy’s the other night, you might heard the announcement that Kathy Griffin took home a statue for best reality programming for her now two-time award-winning series, Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List. More good news for Ms. Griffin is that her show got picked up for a fifth season by the Bravo network. All this success and these accolades, while amazingly fortunate for her career and her bank account, beg the question: Is Kathy Griffin even on the D-List anymore?
And Then There Were Four ... or, as we like to think of this week's design-for-each-other Project Runway challenge, And Then They Finally Got Rid of Suede ... or, according to most PR fans out there, And Then Kenley Crossed The Line And Now She's Evil.
Whatever you took away, for this week's edition of The Heidi Chronicles John and Colin discuss the Kenley hostility - probably not that serious - Kenley's hip-hop outfit - not that bad, really! - and a certain Blind Item which might explain Nina Garcia's two-episode absence. Eek!
Ariel Aparicio is a man of mystery. A Rock-n-Roller with Cuban roots; a child of Miami and a son of New York; a former nightclub luminary and current restaurant aficionado; and now, of course, a guest of Homophonic...
But Ariel is a lot more than just a series of fascinating contradictions. He's also a stage-romping, nation-touring, guitar-smashing rock star with a series of albums under his belt and a brand new release that brings Queer Rock to the forefront.
He's regaled us with tales of Andy Warhol and Grace Jones. He's taken us by the hand through the trials and tribulations of being an Out Rocker, a musical pioneer, and a father. And he's even treated us to
a private performance of his hit single "I'm the One."
And now, kids, it's your turn! See it all after the jump!
If not, where have you been all morning? Listen to the Britney Spears "Womanizer" singleafter the jump - the first song from her upcoming Circus album - which hit the radios this A.M. The song ain't bad, and I'm sure it'll continue to grow on me, as most Britney productions do. Here's hoping the video's decent.
The verses sound to me like "Ooh, Ooh, Baby" from Blackout - and, of course, this song could have been on Blackout, no question. (Don't get me wrong, I would not complain if Jive/Zomba just gave me Blackout part two.) And I'm particularly digging the line,"You say I'm crazy; I got your crazy!"
I can't be the only one who responded "Huh?" to news that Jodie Sweetin (aka Stephanie Tanner), is shooting a reality show with her husband, Cody Herpin, about their home life and the raising of their child. The fact that she was once on Full House must seal the deal — this one has "fascinating" flashing all over it.
I'm not trying to diss Stephanie Sweetin, though, as she pulled through her public meth addiction and went on to have a creatively named child (Zoie Laurel May Herpin). If she wants to be on TV under reality circumstances and can get a network to buy the thing, more power to her, I guess. I suppose her fans and the rubbernecking crowd might constitute a large enough viewership to limp through a season.
Yes, we all think Lil' Val is adorable (the casts of 30 Rock and Ugly Betty, John Polly...) and his sweet, angsty "Get on With It" track, especially those "no, no, nos," just makes me want to squeeze him even more.
OK, I probably shouldn't call Val Emmich Lil' Val - as proud as I am of that - as he's actually around 30 and has been working in music since 2001. And in honor of his Little Daggers album release this week, let's watch the first official video. I have to say, though - Val getting pelted by dodge balls is making my mind go back to that Lil' thing...
Daily Buzz Bits: Hayden Panettiere Says She Was Gay in Her Past Life
Whew! Relief on two Britney fronts: The actual “Womanizer” single cover has arrived – and the single itself will drop tomorrow. – Popjustice
And this wig shot does not mean Brit’s back to her dark, head-shaving days: She was just filming the "Womanizer" music video - without incident, it seems! -
Faded Youth
Well, gee – maybe Hayden Panettiere’s not as annoying as I thought she was: A reporter asked Hayden's take on gay marriage: "I'm for anything gay … I adore gay men, gay women, gay everything. I think I was gay in a past life." - Eonline
Mmm... Tom Ford is on the cover of Vanity Fair Germany, and even though the designer’s never going to look bad, I’m not sure about this ensemble. – ONTD
And it looks like Colin Firth and Julianne Moore signed on to Tom's foray into film. - Eonline
Whitney Port has left The Hills for ... The City. Hooray! There's also a new man in Whitney's life ... or in the script's life. - Gawker
Gwyneth Paltrow has decided to break into the world of online media ventures with the launch of GOOP, an inspirational “lifestyle” website for women. Well one thing’s for sure: If it’s anything like some of her acting ventures from recent memory (Shallow Hal, anyone?), it will be less-than-inspiring.
However, I’m a woman, and I’m open to the prospect of being inspired, so I figured I should at least give it a chance. Based on the site’s introductory post (the only content available so far), here’s the scoop on GOOP. Paltrow’s life is “good,” and on top of that, she is a good person. She is healthy and hard-working, and she loves being a mom. But the really exciting thing about all this is that she wants to help us make our lives good, too!
Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory and their brand of alienating electro-pop - and sometimes folktronica - have another Seventh Tree video for us. This one's an ode to drifting, mysterious girls on skateboards who enjoy quiet time on the beach and folding napkins - a girl we want to run away with ... but then, "bring it all back" ... Whatever. I don't care, Alison.
Sorry. Clearly at some point I turned on Alison Goldfrapp; maybe I just wish I liked her high-brow pop more than I do (or maybe it was the Madonna-Kylie dis; that was hard to get over). And doesn't she just look so mean? ...What's the problem?
In 2008, Jean Grae released Jeanius, one of the year's best albums. After years of being delayed, her label released it, without her consent. They would be the only ones to profit. The album's follow-up, The Evil Jeanius (dig that subtle title), will drop September 30, and Grae won't see a cent from its sales.
Grae is your favorite rapper's favorite ghostwriter. "More ignored than a homeless on a train begging for change/more credit due to me than a store that doesn't exchange," as she says. She who acknowledges her "dykey fans" on "Mean" and belongs on everyone's top five emcees list, who shows up the great Talib Kweli on every track the do together, blew Akrobatik, Lif and El-P out of the water on the stunning "Post Mortem."
Is it just me or is Natasha Bedingfield looking more and more like Chelsea Handler lately? Or did she always? Not that such a thing matters; I like them both ... if not this song: It just reads standard, churned-out DarkChild ballad. And I just missed the boat on this video concept. Natasha's sings in front of comic book-covered walls ... but then the formal-wear just looks weird. One of those outfits makes her look like a straight-up flight attendant, too - and not in a sexy, "Toxic" way.
But no more complaints - as I said, I like Natasha - and the title track fromPocketful of Sunshine (which you can watch after the jump) makes up for anything.
We need to brighten up this dark day in ClayNation, and I have just the thing: Colton Fordchoreography! Yes, one-time porn megastar Colton Ford has a new video - this one's the title track from his debut album - and Colton stretches beyond his clear go-go dancing talents. Feel better, Claymates?
I don’t know what that woman is doing there, though; no one’s buying it Colton. (Watch Colton's collabo video - which I actually kind of like - with gay rapper Cazwell, "That's Me," after the jump...)
According to most of America, gay boys are the only homosexuals who possess any taste when it comes to styling or interior decorating. We gay women have been branded as handy, conventional — even frugal. While I don’t mind many of the labels associated with my gayness, I am understandably offended when lumped into the category of being unfashionable. Gays have become more and more prominent in mainstream media in recent years, which is a huge step socially. However, look who they chose to represent “us” in the world of supposed high style:
Honey Labrador. Why, God, why? She falls into every stereotypical category of generic lesbian — with the exception of possibly wearing more eyeliner for the camera. It not only horrified me when she made her debut on Queer Eye for the Straight Girl in 2005, but it’s even scarier to think she’s still pretty much the “face” of lesbians with style (even though the show has been off the air since last October).
Give Janice Dickinson his number! Well, maybe not - the Olympics is one thing...
The out Australian diver who took the gold in Beijing this year got all primped and bronzed as thecover boy forDNA magazine. (Check out the site 'cause there's a nice close-up of Matt's happy trail ... We have to discuss something we didn't already see on the diving board.) I'm guessing there was an interview involved, but who cares?
Ah, I've been dipping from the U.K. a lot this week! Here we have the Jordin Sparks "Tattoo" video for them Britains - and it's a whole lot better than ours was. I kind of forgot about "Tattoo," in fact; it was never the hit that "No Air" was.
This version's all about tattoos magically forming on people in some sort of touchy-feely hippie commune, which is kind of cool except the tattoos are just pointless, inspirational words such as FREE and PEACE. Anyway, there's also some kind of ugly watch ad deal going on...
Watch the U.S. treatment of "Tattoo" after the jump - along with Jordin telling VMAs audiences virginity is A-OK!
Via People magazine, Clay Aiken finally said it ... because of his baby. Oh, Clay - to think all those times you said you were just asexual, you were lying to me?
Daily Buzz Bits: Pussycat Dolls Dominate Ellen, Is That How Lindsay Lohan Came Out?
The Pussycat Dolls’ sophomore album, Doll Domination, comes out today – “Bottle Pop” and “Elevator” both get a nice, gay thumbs-up – and the crew went for the school-girl for Ellen. (Watch the performance online.)
Things I would change about Lindsay Lohan’s soft coming-out: Not on the heels of plane-crash news; not on a radio show called Loveline; not among terms such as “blessed” and “guardian angels” I wish Lindsay didn’t use, anyway… And just say it yourself, Lohan! - Defamer
Jive/Zomba pushed back the release of Britney’s “Womanizer,” because some intern at a Nashville radio station leaked an unfinished version. And now someone is making fake single covers! (Of course this cartoon is fan-made; even after the Blackout cover, I’m giving Brit’s label more credit than this.) - Dlisted
When I watched Big and Carrie decide to rekindle their dysfunctional relationship on the last episode of Sex and the City in 2004, I wiped the tears from my face and came to terms with the fact that I would no longer know what was going on in the lives of Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte.
That did not turn out to be the case.
It seems the Sex and the City phenomenon isn’t going anywhere — especially after the recent news that Sex scribe Candace Bushnell will write a young adult series about Carrie’s teen years, aptly titled The Carrie Diaries.
New Lady GaGa Singles - "Beautiful Dirty Rich" & "Poker Face"
Yes, yes, Lady GaGa - give me a video for "Poker Face." That song is pure hotness - kind of like a darker, funkier "Just Dance." Anyway kids, it's time for your GaGa check-in, because the gay princess has been doing lots of random things lately: Did we all see our girl on The Hills? When Lauren and Whitney had to zip up her malfunctioning catsuit? GaGa wouldn't even address the girls, which was pretty cool.
Now I've been listening to most of GaGa's debut album, The Fame, for a while (you can watch a sort of video preview/montage of The Fame after the jump, courtesy of GaGa's MySpace) - so it feels to me like she made her debut a long time ago. Officially, though, The Fame comes out October 28 via Interscope. Until then, GaGa's releasing singles "Poker Face" - all about using your "muffin" to manipulate boys - and "Beautiful Dirty Rich" - all about coke-loving L.E.S.-ers with trust funds - which will air on Dirty Sexy Money... Makes sense.
Just last week, we blogged about Brad Pitt giving a hundred thousand dollars to fight Proposition 8 (which would end gay marriages in California), and wondered why more high profile people in the entertainment industry hadn't offered up the big bucks.
Now comes word that Steven Spielberg and his wife Kate Capshaw are also donating a hundred grand to defeat the measure.
We've acknowledged it before: Rock stars have superb senses of style. That must be why several of them have wanted to see us mimic their styles, while also turning a profit.
Sonic Youth frontwoman Kim Gordon is the latest rock lady to make a foray into fashion. She recently launched her line, Mirror/Dash, with friends/designers Melinda Wansbrough and Jeffrey Monteiro.
What's special about Mirror/Dash is that the items will be limited edition, so the first piece (an awesome military-inspired jacket) will only be available to 50 consumers via the website for a cool $415.
I've been a fan of the Sugababes ever since that pop-y piece of cake called "Push The Button" - but I understand why they were never popular in America; that kind of straight-up pop isn't for everyone. I will be surprised, though, if tight club number "Girls" doesn't get a fair amount of U.S. downloads. I already want to take a shot to this song and go to Splash. Here come the girls!
The best segment of this video belongs to husky-voiced Amelle - Amelle's my favorite since she was involved in a club ass-kicking and in an attack on her neighbor's car - as she grinds up on another girl on the stripper pole. Keisha still rocks the best voice of the crew, and as far as blonde-y goes... she's a little stiff and wholesome for this sound. "Girls" is the first single from the Sugababes upcoming album, Catfights and Spotlights, due in the U.K. in October. It feels like the fifth album, Change, just came out, though; I have to remember we Americans are behind on these girls.
Watch Sugababes hits - well, U.K. hits - "About You Now" and "Push The Button" after the jump...
In an apparent attempt to do a mastermix of his prior arrests, gay pop legend George Michael was arrested in a public toilet over the weekend in Hampstead Heath carrying both Class A (like crack, for example) and Class C (marijuana) drugs. No word on any other "funny business" going down in this bathroom.
Michael, who has had both bathroom-related and drug-related run-ins with the law before, was given a "caution" by police and released, and has apologized to fans:
SolangeKnowles may be tearing up fashion shows in Italy right now (see the photo?), but expect to see Solange herself on LOGO Wednesday at midnight ET/PT as host of our new pop music video and pop culture show, NewNowNext PopLab. From what we've seen of her hosting, Solange chats about her out-there (but fierce!) fashion sense, her idolization of Prince and The Supremes and - of course - her love for her gay fans. Don't miss!
In the meantime, watch the NNN.com exclusive interview with Solange from a few months back: She talked about her love of electronic music and her talent for penning gay club hits ... even though poor girl was in a cast at the time.
For an analysis of this year's Emmy ceremony, read my review. Here's a lighter look of some of our favorite women on the red carpet at the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards tonight.
The women of The Office: Mindy Kaling, Melora Hardin, and Jenna Fischer
Oh, my Leona - it's been too long! Yes, there was the don't-move-or-you'll-fall-off-the-pole Olympics showing with Jimmy Page, but I have to admit I'm much more excited about this U.K. video treatment of Spirit's "Forgive Me."
Don't let the name fool you; this isn't one of Leona Lewis' usual power ballads: Leona actually goes all hot-pink and cheeky for this one! Along with lots of fun, Broadway-style dancing in the streets segments, there's even a Tyra-approved burlesque number. And ... oh, who am I kidding? I'd love Leona no matter she was doing; don't listen to me.
(That purple trench coat is objectively fantastic, though.)
And while we're in U.K. mode - watch their version of the "Bleeding Love" video after the jump...
So you may have heardthat last night's 60th Emmy Awards wasn't quite the gay-fest that we had hoped. But still, a few moments (Neil Patrick Harris's introducing David Burtka as "my better half" to Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet; Bryan Batt's joining the Mad Men cast on stage for their big win; the clip of Sydney Pollack saying "Will's gay" from Will & Grace) were bumps in visibility, and overall the wins went to gay-inclusive and gay-fave shows (Mad Men, 30 Rock, The Colbert Report).
The show also had its low points, namely the hosting situation (ABYSMAL ... and isn't this technically what those five people are actually qualified to do? Host a reality program?) and the sad trotting out of the Laugh-In cast for a retread of the joke wall routine ... it was meant to be a celebration of the brilliance of the show but I'm sorry, it wound up looking like a rehearsal for next year's "In Memoriam" montage.
Out actor Bryan Batt (second from R) and his fellow Men

Daily Buzz Bits: Those New Project Runway-ers Get Lindsay!
We'll be hearing Beyonce’s new song from her third album, “If I Was a Boy,” October 7 - and something tells me she took that cop outfit home. – Just Jared
OK, maybe there will be one reason to watch: Lindsay Lohan just filmed her segment as a guest judge on season six of Project Runway. - UsWeekly
The Tron outfit’s not the only crazy sh*t happening on Janet Jackson’s Rock Witchu Tour… - Just Jared
Ouch! For some reason I thought Lance Bass would be used to wearing heels. - Towleroad
Jada Pinkett Smith (The Women), who just wrapped her writing and directorial feature debut, The Human Contract, is returning to television as the star and executive producer of TNT's drama pilot Time Heals.
Jada will play Nancy Hawthorne, a strong but caring director of nursing at Charlotte Mercy Hospital in North Carolina, "a single mother who always puts the pain of others first."
I must admit the premise doesn't grab me. But after the success of The Closer and Saving Grace, TNT has proven they know how to make dramas starring strong female characters, and the fact that the show is being produced by — and starring — a woman of color gives me hope. So I'll probably give it a shot.
Now that the Project Runway season five top six have all shown at Bryant Park - although, as we all know, a certain pocket square took the token straight out of the running - we're busy theorizing who'll take home that Saturn Astra come the finale. Not that this week's Working Girl challenge didn't have plenty of talking points: mainly Nina's iceberg of rage, Jerell's wacky outfits and Mini-Kenley!
By now many of you heard that one of television’s most famous acronyms, TRL, is going off the air. The MTV show, known formally as Total Request Live, will have its final countdown in November after a 10-year run.
TRL has been the launching pad for music sensations such as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and ’NSync. Today, the show is a must for any artist who wants to even touch the youth demographic. Performers such as Rihanna, Ashlee Simpson and “it” teen Miley Cyrus all make certain they pay TRL a visit when they head out on a promotional tour.
The MTV show was and is the place to go to find out which performer/band is hot. If you are a singer and there isn’t a swarm of teenagers fanatically screaming bloody murder outside the windows of the Time Square studio at your TRL appearance, then your band is just not hot.
I’m so happy about this single because – I know this isn't really true, but it feels this way – it's totally the random track from an album I love that never gets label attention. But it's here!
I was majorly into the Santogold album - as we all were - and "Lights Out" was and is hands-down my favorite track. I was so scared it had gone down as the Bud Light with Lime commercial!
The song is so dreamy and tragic, and even though I'm not crazy about those robotic backup singers - they're still around from the LES, it seems - I enjoyed this patterned video treatment, mostly thanks to Santi.
And watch Santogold's "LES Artistes" after the jump...
Brad Pitt was camped out at #15 on this year's Hot 100 list but he
can probably look forward to a much higher ranking next year. The actor
has donated $100,000 to fight Proposition 8, which if passed would put
an end to gay marriages in California. His donation is thus far the largest donation by an A-list celebrity for this cause! Way to go, Brad! Here's the statement he released Wednesday:
"Because no one has the right to deny another their life, even though
they disagree with it, because everyone has the right to live the life
they so desire if it doesn't harm another and because discrimination
has no place in America, my vote will be for equality and against
Proposition 8."

The gays out in Hollywood are super-excited about the new stage musical version of 9 to 5 that just opened at L.A.'s Ahmanson Theater for its pre-Broadway run. In fact those festive gay media mavens at World of Wonder (The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Party Monster, the forthcoming RuPaul's Drag Race) have mounted a big, spangly, chesty group show of over 40 artists paying tribute to 9 to 5's creator and gay icon Dolly Parton.
The show, DOLLYPOP, opened last Friday at the World of Wonder Storefront Art Gallery, and we got some pics sent in by our lovely pal Marc Malkin of E! Online. Looks like the big opening was a hoot! Drag Dolly's!!! Cute guys! More Dolly drag queens. I Love New York/I Love Money castaways. And Sophia Loren! Click to see a fab World of Wonder Daily Freakshow video from DOLLYPOP with legendary James St. James, and catch this preview below!
If you're in L.A. check out the show (it runs thru Oct. 8). And enjoy more pics from the opening (after the jump) to tide you over 'til then...
A few years back, Brokeback Mountain was all the rage, doing record-breaking box office for a gay-themed movie, winning countless awards (although, controversially, not that
Best Picture Oscar), and finally showcasing the true talent of the late Heath Ledger, who had previously been squandering them on teen movies and horror genre fare.
After this year's air-kiss-to-Brit of an MTV VMAs, you may know Britney Spears' sixth album, Circus, will come out December 2, in accordance with her 27th birthday. Yes, Blackout, then Circus - and I guess album number seven will be Sh*t-Show. Now, one year later, I am still listening to Blackout and thank Danja and Keri Hilson every day for that tacky disc, but of course the whole project had problems - mostly related to bonkers Brit herself. I can't help but be happy for another album, but I don't know if Britney's really ready to be normal and do her job - even if her weave is looking better these days.
The first Circus single, "Womanizer," will hit radios next week - and a possible single, "Candy From Strangers," has already leaked. In addition, there's that footage of Brit dancing like her old self to a song called "Mannequin" floating around... Hey - that's already more work than Blackout ever got!
I’m getting more and more into this onslaught of plaid as a fall trend. I feel like it’s giving lesbians a second shot at the print and we — more than most — need a chance at redeeming ourselves with this sometimes fashion faux pas.
While it’s true that a lot of people wore the fabric back in ‘94, lesbians as a collective set themselves up to be fashion disasters in the area of flannel. I know that we ought to respect our elders, especially because those ladies helped pave the way as gay pioneers; is that why they sported the look for so long and with such enthusiasm? Whatever the reason for it, they created a stereotype. I say here and now we seize the day and take back our flannel pride.
Some of us may wear it long (dare I say with leggings). I like this best when you belt it, but it’s also a good look when worn loose. There’s everything you could think of: dresses, jumpers and it’s all pretty great without looking too trite.
