RuPaul's Drag Race Preview: Butch Women & Warrior Princesses
Monday nights brings another heat of RuPaul's Drag Race to the world at large. And while they're gonna have a hard time topping this past week's tearjerker (Blame Ongina!), the prospects for amusing antics look pretty good.
First a crew of super-butch female jocks (boxers! fighters! martial artists! all scowling!) march in, and Bebe & Ongina and the gals all squeal and cower. (Ladies, get a grip!) Then they are forced into physical exertion (Punch! Kick! Pow!) and yelled at drill-sergeant style by said females. FUN!
But lest those tough female infiltrators get too hard-edged or uppity, the Drag Racers must then give these butch babes full on drag queen makeovers. Ah, yes... A reality show competition classic!
See more previews and a shot of the "Warrior Princess" guest judge after the jump!
OK, I don't have mine either. But if you're either a parent of a 12-year-old or a 12-year-old yourself (um, are you allowed here?),chances are you're lined up already to catch Joe, Nick and Kevin's big mega-concert film coming out today.
You can read a report from Tuesday's big Hollywood premiere, which was a clean-cut screaming-tween-apalooza! And if you need to get primed on your Jonas knowledge, read this fun piece on how to become a Jonas Brothers fan from Dennis Hensley on MSNBC. Then hit the multiplex and start screaming!!!!
Who's your favorite Jonas? I think mine is Joe. He just sings and plays tambourine and looks cool. Who doesn't love a tambourine?
Ongina Delivers $25,000 to the Harvey Milk School - In Fierce Heels!
Looks like the lovely RuPaul's Drag Race starlet Ongina is already busy with her new gig as a M.A.C Viva Glam spokesmodel (a title she won in this past week's episode of RuPaul's Drag Race). Yesterday, the petite drag powerhouse delivered a check for $25,000 from the M.A.C. AIDS Fund to the folks at NYC's Harvey Milk High School.
The school is a safe haven for at-risk LGBT kids, and the NY Times reports that about %25 of the students identify as transgender. So, yes they were happy to see the fabulous little Miss Ongina show up with some dough!
Ongina's a fan of the Harvey Milk School too, as she herself had a rough time of it, growing up gay in Washington State. During the check presentation yesterday, Ongina commented that she would have appreciated a “school that provided me as much of an education as a comfort zone.”
While at the school, Ongina talked to the kids and answered their questions: "What were his favorite makeup products (M.A.C C-Thru is her favorite lip gloss) and how long it takes to get into drag (two hours)." And yes, she was rocking a pair of Burberry Porsum patent stilettos at the time.
M•A•C MakeUp Tips from the Girls of RuPaul’s Drag Race
Flawless 101: Get some subtle, sophisticated makeup tips from the Drag Racers!
Ok, as much as I aspire to be a drag queen I don’t know a damn thing about makeup. But I know that hot women wear M•A•C (Dame Edna! RuPaul! Xtina! Hello Kitty!) and get really excited about it. Hot women also share their secrets on how to apply said makeup, so here are some dishy makeup tips from the beat broads of RuPaul’s Drag Race.
Some of these divas aren’t with us anymore (they’re not dead, they’re just not on the show, children!), but their legacy of fierce foundations and luscious lined lips lives on!!!
Wanna look your best when you head out of the house, painted up like a high-class ‘ho? Read on!
Fashion Icon Karl's Big Little Fashion Week with Jack Mackenroth & Celebs!
Finger puppet Karl -- skinny as ever!
In one big final flourish, Jack Mackenroth serves up a celeb-filled photo album of Fall Fashion Week 09 -- with a certain towering fashion icon!
If you have been following my blog entries for the past week or so you know that I have been lurking around the tents at Bryant Park watching as many fashion shows at my sleep-deprived brain could handle. What I forgot to mention is that throughout the entire week I have been sneaking a plus one into all of the shows with me. He is a fashion powerhouse and very slim due to his amazing diet techniques so he slips right into my pocket. His name is Karl Lagerfelt. Not to be confused with the real Karl Lagerfeld.
Giving Karl the finger.
I wish I could lie and take credit for making this absolutely genius creation but the credit goes to a woman named Melanie Howard who hand sews each and every little Karl herself. She also makes a Marc Jacobs and a Vivienne Westwood but Karl is the fiercest. Everyone who met him during fashion week instantly knew who he was supposed to be.
After the jump, Karl poses with celebs galore! TIM GUNN! NINA GARCIA! SEAN LENNON! HOT MODELS! "30 ROCK" STARS! FAMOUS GAYS!
N.A.S.A.'s Stellar Global Hip-Hop/ Electro Tunes & "Money" Video
N.A.S.A. isn't just for rocketships anymore. In fact, N.A.S.A. (as it relates to this blogpost) is the L.A. and Sao Paolo based DJ/Producer duo (Get it? North America + South America = N.A.S.A.) who swirl together elements of hip-hop, electro, baile funk and lots of other crazy noises.
Their debut album, The Spirit of Apollo came out last week, and their new video for "Money" is rotating on MTVU -- or watch it above! Check out all the Shepherd Fairey graphics! And what's more timely than a tune about financial misanthropy in these troubled times?
But what's really freaky is the staggering list of guest stars that N.A.S.A.'s Squeak E. Clean (who's Spike Jonze's brother) and DJ Zegon recruited to appear on this record: M.I.A., Santogold, Kanye West, Karen O. and Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Lykke Li, David Byrne, RZA, KRS-One, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Tom Waits, Method Man, Nina Persson of The Cardigans... And so on! Gaaaah!
Completely Adorable Russell Tovey Gives Very Cute Interview
Super-cute and very talented young British actor Russell Tovey (The History Boys) is out. And he's starring in the UK sci-fi BBC3 series Being Human as a werewolf.
We all know how Kanye West likes to talk, especially about himself. That's why his installment of VH1 Storytellers airing this Saturday night (Feb. 28) at 9pm ET, is likely to be extra story-packed. Check out a peek of KW doing "Stronger" above. Pretty lights, eh?
Stereogum reports that West will do "Love Lockdown," but you'll only see that one online. But no worries; in between all the talking he's doing pared down versions of nine other tunes.
Luke & Noah from "As The World Turns" Rock Out on AfterElton!
This may be one of the cutest things I've ever seen. Onscreen heart-throbs Luke and Noah (Van Hansis and Jake Silbermann, respectively) from As The World Turns stopped by the MTV and Logo offices recently, and played the video game Rock Band with AfterElton's Brian Juergens. Like, really!
Both Van and Jake are mega-adorable. And this was all spurred by their forthcoming appearances on a big "Rock the Soap" cruise, which is a music-themed fan-cruise where soap-opera addicts get to mingle and float around the Mexican coast with daytime stars. Freaky, right?
Then what happened? Dustin Lance Black and Sean Penn won for Milk! Kate Winslet won -- and gushed. Little slum children triumphed! And the commericals made Liz cry (Damn those True North nut ads!)
Plus, gays were kissing, Hugh Jackman danced and sang (a lot), and Miley Cyrus zoomed in from a prom in Vegas!
Thanks for watching us this awards season. Or as our Japanese filmmaking friend said onstage Sunday night: "Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto!"
And we hope to be back with another vlog series soon. Anything you wanna see us babble on madly about?
SPOILER ALERT: This one's hard not to reveal because there's so much to deal with from last night's RuPaul's Drag Race... So expect lots of drama after the jump!
Also there's a special link to a podcast interview with Ongina who had a major night. Above, watch the behind-the-scenes Under the Hood video, that shows all the bitchery going on backstage. Jade and Shannel tear into the judges, and at the end you see Ongina talk about her big moment.
Jack Mackenroth Does the Project Runway Show, Christian Siriano, Hot Olympians & Tori Spelling!
All this past week, Project Runway alum Jack Mackenroth has been blogging from NYC Fashion Week! Here's his last official show report, but expect more hot photos coming at you soon!
As Mercedes-Benz Fall ’09 Fashion Week draws to a close the fashion-heads breathe a collective sigh of relief. The models are eating carbs again and the designers can take a few minutes off before starting on next season’s collection. It was a lot of work covering just a small percentage of the shows and trying to look moderately fabulous while doing so.
Watching a fashion show is like being in the eye of a taffeta hurricane. While you’re in the eye, everything is seemingly calm and flawless. However everything before and after is a frenzied, microwavable hot pocket of mayhem.
Dustin Lance Black and Sean Penn's Backstage Oscar Video!
I posted a link to this earlier, but above is the great video of Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black talking to the press backstage after winning, and giving more passionate discourse about the gay-rights importance of his film.
And below is Best Actor champ Sean Penn also serving the right wing a bruising backstage, too.
Oscars for Sean, Kate, Dustin Lance Black & Slumdog Millionaire
Hugh Jackman brought his big gun to last night's Oscars. Bang?
Oscars were doled out last night! Yay for Milk's Sean Penn for snagging Best Actor and Milk Screenwriter Dustin Lance Black for nabbing Best Original Screenplay. Both of them spoke out for gay rights onstage, and then backstage talking to reporters. Penn joked that his win was a big score for "commie homo-loving sons-of-guns", championed gay marriage and called out anti-gay haters.
Kate Winslet, Sean Penn and Penelope Cruz backstage. Congrats, kids.
Black was more moving, telling the press backstage: "Harvey gave me his story, and it saved my life. And I just felt like it's time to pass it on. The only thing I really knew I wanted to say is tell those [gay and lesbian] kids out there they are going to be all right."
Gay activist and Harvey Milk cohort Cleve Jones and Oscar-winner Dustin Lance Black. Good gays!
Entertaiment Weekly has a great write-up of lots of the best acceptance speeches... And yes, Hugh Jackman sang and danced a lot. It didn't all work, and the show went on forever, but God bless him, he gave it his all. And looked uber-handsome.
Slumdog Milionaire won eight Oscars (including Best Picture and Best Director for Danny Boyle) and Kate Winslet won Best Actress. Get more pics after the jump and a good dish from EW here.
Oscar Special! Best Supporting Vlog with MILK's Denis O'Hare!
Oscar weekend is upon us! And for today's Best Supporting Vlog, somehow Liz Dahmen and I have been graced by a visit from one of the stars of 8-times-nominated MILK! Tony Winner Denis O'Hare stops in for a chat!
Right now Denis is onstage in NYC in Uncle Vanya, with Maggie Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard and Mamie Gummer. In MILK, Denis played nasty anti-gay State Senator John Briggs, and he rocked! But you also saw this out actor play a evil doctor opposite Angelina Jolie in Changeling, and a nice doctor in Babymama with Tina Fey.
You've also seen Denis in Garden State, Michael Clayton, A Mighty Heart, and (one of my faves) The Anniversary Party. Denis also snagged a Tony Award for his amazing turn in the gay baseball drama, Take Me Out. And he also starred in Sweet Charity and Assassins. And coming soon, you'll see Denis in Duplicity with Julia Roberts and Clive Owen, and The Proposal with Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bulock. Busy!
Today, Denis talks about making MILK, hanging with Angelina & Brad, and he offers his Oscar picks, including a rundown of some of the films up for the Best Animated Short Film prize! Yes, we get specific like that.
SPOILER ALERT: If you haven't caught up on this past week's RuPaul's Drag Race, then hurry! Cuz Monday's new episode is hurling at you fast. Check the preview above!
For their first challenge this week, the girls have to pair up and do each other's makeup in a speedy 30 minutes. Wha? Can a scratching, clawing queen hellbent on victory be counted on to paint up her ladyfriends? We'll see... I'm guessing Nina Flowers has a airbrush and blowtorch in her arsenal.
And in the preview below, it looks like there's some shade between Nina and Rebecca. Ay! And the girls are informed that they've gotta compete to be the next MAC Viva Glam spokesmodel. This one gets personal with flashbacks back to Ongina and Bebe's childhoods in the Philippines and Cameroon, respectively. Gay baby photos??? Yes, please... Bring on the drama and tears!
Easy. Breezy. Beautiful. COVER GIRL! Yep, RuPaul is bringing the glamour in her new video for the single "Cover Girl," which you've probably heard on RuPaul's Drag Race, as it plays during each weekly RuPaul runway reveal (and at the show's end when the gals all prance around together).
Another video for the tune will feature the eventual Drag Race winner, but for now, enjoy viva-glamtastic Ru, a hot little red sportscar, some striding man-flesh, and the tune's producer, DJ RevoLucian (aka Lucian Piane), dancing around with a big hose.
Broadway Guy Nick Adams, Interviewed: NewNowNext NOISE!
Nick on the cover of HX in January 09; and in his skivvies.
Guys and Dolls is in previews on Broadway right now (opening March 1st) and among its big, ballsy cast is hot out actor/dancer Nick Adams. You've seen Nick on the cover of HX and Instinct, in other B'way shows like A Chorus Line (where he allegedly made Mario Lopez jealous of his muscles), and in 2Xist undies ads.
That's all we needed to know for a reason to chat him up! Watch the video interview as Nick talks about the new show, undressing with Mario Lopez, backstage "showmances" and why he's single.
Warning: You'll hear me ask brilliantly probing questions like "So is it weird being an underwear model?" Lord help us all. Thanks, Nick!
Michael Kors, Heidi Klum & Swiss Army Men - Jack Mack's Fashion Week Tour of Duty Continues
Jane Krakowski: Pretty in pink at Michael Kors
Jack Mackenroth's sharp and spot-on Fashion Week coverage continues!!!
I was really looking forward to the Michael Kors show. I have not seen him in forever and I was supposed to have a brief pre-show interview with him but when I arrived his PR team had already packed up the check-in. Oh well. I figured I would try for post-show. Right. Not.
The show was excellent. I know that everyone is talking recession doom and gloom but you couldn’t tell from the Kors collection. First of all he did not scrimp on the models. He had some of the top girls right from the get-go. Carmen Cass, Frankie Rayder, Chanel Iman, Raquel Zimmerman, Coco Rocha and my FAVE model of the moment, Tanya Dziahileva.
Diesel, Carlos Miele, Narciso Rodriguez & Other Fashion Blurs - Jack Mackenroth Blogs On!
The Front Row at Diesel: Kate Bosworth, Common, Roisin Murphy & Nicole Richie; can you find me and my ProjRun bestie Kevin in this pic? Check two rows back...
Before I start gibber-jabbering and free associating about god knows what, let me just say that I have a new respect for bloggers. It’s a full time job especially if you are a one man/woman show. I would have liked to cover more shows and do more interviews but at the end of the day 4 or 5 is the absolute maximum I can handle before dropping dead of the bird flu. Anyways–KUDOS BLOGGERS!! Thanks god for you so we all have something to read while we pretend we are busy at work in our cubicles.
So... Monday the 16th was the first day that I had a video crew in tow to interview some of the designers for LOGO’s PopLab. You would think the tents are Fort Knox by the way they stop everyone at the front gates. They wouldn’t let our make-up guy in because he didn’t have a white badge and they actually kept John Bartlett waiting outside the tents for 10 minutes while we scrambled to get him inside.
[ NOTE: Check out this fun interview from San Francisco Bay Times as they chat up Jack about covering Fashion Week, and the charity Living Positive By Design! ]
AfterElton's chatting up Magnum-man J.D.! He talks about his admiration for Pedro Zamora, and then holds nothing back when dishing on his current onscreen roomies Devyn ("she's on this high horse") and Katelynn ( "she manipulates people..."). Ouch!
Then he calls out happy little freakazoid Chet! "I wasn’t like the most flamboyant gay guy, you know? Obviously Chet had more gay tendencies than I did, so everybody thought he was the gay one." JD, telling it like it is. Or his version, anyway.
Diane Von Furstenberg, plus Twinkle, Andy & Debb, Tim Hamilton - Jack Mackenroth's Fashion Train Rolls On!
Jack & Coke, please...
Mercy! Jack Mackenroth keeps on going. Here's more of his relentless NY Fashion Week coverage...
Jesus, Mary and Joseph! It’s only been 4.5 days of New York Fall ‘09 Fashion Week and I am already in a chiffon-induced coma. I don’t know hows these models do it. Oh right, they get paid thousands of dollars to walk up and down and get their make up done. That’s incentive.
SO where was I? I covered the Barbie show. Flawless! I got to chat with Project Runway Season 3 alumn, Robert Best, who designed the collector’s Barbie that was given out at the show. I heart him. Foxy, too.
Sarah Jessica Parker Talks Up "Sex and the City 2"
And the role of Carrie's mother/garden gnome will be played by...
For some reason Sarah Jessica Parker decided to gab to Billy Bush (ewww.) of Access Hollywood about some details of the now-confirmed Sex and the City movie sequel.
In SATC 2: Electric Boogaloo, expect a "massive romp" of a good time -- none of that Carrie moping around we saw in the last flick. However, since we're in a recession, expect it to be all about burlap instead of labels, paper bag lunches and going barefoot. Ya know, well drinks instead of Cosmos, etc.
So, it's like... Yippee! We're poor! Let's whoop it up. But will a married Carrie be a fun Carrie? Ah, well... At least Samantha's single. And I gotta agree with DListed. How about a cameo for Rojo Caliente???
That nice Brit musician Mika is hard at work on his second album. On his site, he's got a new little video tour taking you into the studio with him, and he gabs merrily about how he puts songs together, and serves up snippets of his recent collaborations with with Owen Pallett (aka Final Fantasy) and the Andre Crouch Gospel Choir. Hear a bit of the "Clapping Song!"
It all sounds fab and as high-energy and dreamy/poppy as you'd expect. And watching Mika get animated about it is adorable. He's a happy little muppet!
Barbie Overload!!! Jack Needs a Doll! Fashion Week Coverage Continues!
Jack Mackenroth's coverage of Fashion Week for NewNowNext continues!
As the world becomes increasingly eco-friendly, by unveiling her first ever full runway collection, Barbie continually reminds us of one thing. PLASTIC IS FANTASTIC!! That bitch must have some massive walk-in closets in that dream house of hers because she has a lot of fabulous clothes.
After the jump, loads of photos! And a video from the show!>/p>
BCBG wouldn’t return my email request for a show ticket either. So let me just review the collection in one word. SNORE. It’s too bad because I love BCBG. There were a few great pieces but most of the coats and dresses were oddly tailored and not flattering. Since I was standing in the nose-bleed section I couldn’t make out a lot of the details but I can tell you they were not cute from far so they were probably far from cute. I did ADORE the gold metallic leggings on most of the models. I will be wearing them later this week.
Jack Mackenroth's Fashion Week Recap - Lindsay Lohan, The Ronsons, Duckie Brown
Today we're catching you up on Jack Mackenroth's mad long weekend of Fashion Week fierceness. Lots more to come all week! Read on!
Opening Day at the Races
So it’s official. One day down (well 2 really) and 7 to go. I am already exhausted. Fashion is hard. It’s more fun when I just got to roll my eyes and steal other people’s gift bags but this season I actually have to pay attention and do interviews. Plus, due to the economy, you can kiss most of the freebies goodbye. VIP only. And I only qualify as MIP (Mildly Important Person). You would think that because of the recession that the designers would be clamoring for free press but some of the PR firms we contacted didn’t even send us the courtesy of a reply email. (See People’s Revolution). I guess some of them are too busy filming fake reality shows about fake jobs at Diane Von Furstenberg. Color me jealous.
Anyway–-I walked into the tent and squealed with glee because the overriding theme inside the tents is everything Barbie. There are life-size Barbie dolls and the word BARBIE completely spelled out in actual barbie dolls is the centerpiece. I am anxiously awaiting the Barbie collection on Saturday.
Jack Mackenroth's Fashion Week Begins! John Bartlett, Chad White & Jillian Lewis
For the next week or so, Project Runway alum and all-around fantastic man, designer Jack Mackrenroth, is gonna be dishing up Fashion Week in NYC for us here at NewNowNext.com! Enjoy, Kittens. Go Jack!
We’ll, it’s here again! The Bryant Park tents are up for the last time before they move to Lincoln Center. The models are emaciated, the editors are frenetic and the designers are popping Xanax in a mad last minute panic. Fashion Week officially starts today, Friday the 13th (oooooooh), but the festivities kicked off yesterday.
I braved the cold and ridiculous wind–my hair was a hot mess–all for the fashion frenzy that is about to crash land in NYC. My day started with a fabulous installation by ubertalented super cutie Jillian Lewis my friend and fellow Project Runway Season 4 designer.
Jack & Jillian
Jack's delicious Fahion Week coverage continues. After the jump, hottie Chad White, John Bartlett and more!
Best Supporting Vlog: Valentines, Presidents & Oscar Math with Professor Liz!
Happy Friday the 13th! And Happy Valentine's Day and Happy Presidents Day Weekend! John Polly and Liz Dahmen are exploding with energy this week in their Best Supporting Vlog -- or is that just too much heart-shaped candy???
Ever timely, they tackle throbbingly intense topics like who should play Iceland's lesbian Prime Minister in a movie: Glenn Close or Alfre Woodard? Plus, they pick their favorite romantic movies (gack!) and then Liz teaches us all a lesson in relativity and "Oscar Math." Watch out for Liz's sexy teacher specs!
And get a sneak peek at their individual Oscar acceptance speeches. Liz's is EVIL!!!
Vogue Cover Girl Michelle Obama Isn't Afraid of Clothes
Michelle Obama's Vogue cover is getting the newsies buzzing. Above is a nice report from Anderson Cooper, with some hot quotes from Vogue's always legendary Andre Leon Talley (who put the piece together). And Michelle's sporting designer Jason Wu again! And some J. Crew, too.
And Gawker's got a great clip of Talley gushing to Wolf Blitzer all about it. I love Dame Andre! And even Blitzer decrees Michelle's look is "fabulous!"
Broadway superstud (my term, not his) Cheyenne Jackson got quizzed by New York Magazine about his personal love affair with NYC. It's cute!
Jackson opines about city noise, Donald Trump, the new Times Square vs. old Times Square (that's the mermaids & tranny porn reference), and makes himself the new spokesman for DiGiorno pizza! Check it out!
And catch him at Feinstein's for his one-man cabaret show in early March. If you can get in.
In this preview clip for next Monday's episode of RuPaul's Drag Race, watch how the girls deal with the challenge to "Channel their Inner Oprah!" It's rough. And amazing.
First, I love the way they all interpret what a newscaster should look like. Do they get their news from Mars Attacks? And then forcing the gals to try and pronounce the name of Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is just plain evil. I love it! But since when do drag queens read the news?
Annie Lennox's new video "Shining Light" (in which she plays all the different characters in her own band - hot!) debuts on Logo's NewNowNext PopLab tonight at 12am ET, which prompted me to think back on this legendary performer. Also, her killer solo best-of CD, The Annie Lennox Collection comes out next Tuesday (2/17). It's bliss.
Annie's won 4 Grammys, 2 Golden Globes and an Oscar, and has been a viciously vigilant AIDS activist for the past 20 years. And she helped to redefine the role of women and gender identity in music (has any other female made a more androgynous splash with their debut appearance - see below)!
A hot collection of pics and a classic video after the jump.
Gay in the U.K. Vlog: Snowstorms, Stephen Fry, Queer History & More!
Those cheeky gays from London, Tim and Ryan, keep serving up choice vlogs over on AfterElton, so let's share!
This week in Gay in the UK the lads report on how Britain coped with their big snowstorm (they didn't!), gay history month, Christian Bale, Stephen Fry and Amy Winehouse!
Kat DeLuna's Big Gay Tour & "Unstoppable" New Video
Kat Deluna: Is that a gay bathroom stall?
Dominican pop starlet Kat DeLuna has a new tune and new album coming at you. And she's enlisted none other than Grammy-slayer Lil' Wayne to help her out. The album is called Inside Out and the new tune is "Unstoppable." Watch the wiggy madness here!
Deluna's totally fun. She looks like she's 12 (she's actually 21) but has the fashion sense of a Vegas drag-queen matriarch! Which maybe explains why she's on the road on a gay nightclub tour right now! She talked to the MTV Tr3s pop-culture blog, Blogamole (best blog name ever) about it:
What made you launch a national gay club tour?
I actually have a huge gay following and I toured with Cyndi Lauper last year. [The tour] is all about gay pride. It is a U.S. tour with additional dates in Mexico.
Bring it, Kat! See ya at the club! Check her big gay tour dates after the jump!
Feist, Grizzly Bear, Cat Power, Antony on New Red Hot + "Dark" Album!
Yes folks, they still make those AIDS-fighting fundraising Red Hot album series (Hello, there's still AIDS.) and there's a extra-stellar new one coming. Dark Was the Night is its title, and its organized by The National's Dessner brothers. And it's an indie rock lover's fantasy come true!
Serving up tunes are Feist, Grizzly Bear, Cat Power, Antony Hegarty, Yo La Tengo, Sufjan Stevens, Iron and Wine, Sharon Jones, Beirut, David Byrne, Arcade Fire, Andrew Bird, Conor Oberst, My Morning Jacket, Gillian Welsh, Jose Gonzalez, The New Pornographers, Spoon, members of Beach House, Belle & Sebastian, and lots more...
Have a listen to a few of the tunes below! It's out on Feb. 16th! Thanks, Modern Tonic!
SPOILER ALERT! Don't read on if you didn't watch last night's RuPaul's Drag Race. And don't watch the "Under the Hood" behind-the-scenes dishfest above, either. Each week this video series takes you in the green room (the "Illusions Lounge" I believe it's called) so you can watch the Drag Racers talk trash and vent!
Dave Grohl and wife Jordyn Blum at the Grammys. They heart gays.
Foo Fighter Dave Grohl loves the gays! No big shocker -- he and his old Nirvana buds were always big homo supporters way back in the day. And this past weekend, Foo Fighter Dave donned a white knotted ribbon while attending all the Grammy festivities, which evidently is meant to raise awareness about equality and gay marriage issues, etc!
E! Online reports that Dave's extra-vocal about it: “Anybody know about whiteknot.org?” Grohl asked the red carpet paparazzi crews. “You know what that’s about? It's 'I believe in love and I believe in equality and I believe in marriage equality.'” Nice. Thanks for fighting the gay (foo) fight, Dave!
Think we're gonna see white knots at the Oscars???
Courage Campaign is an organization working to encourage citizens to contact California's Supreme Court as they prepare to weigh in on gay marriage and Proposition 8. They're battling against Ken Starr and the case he filed in CA to defend the constituionality of Prop 8, which denies marriage rights to 18,000 same-sex couples who were wed in California last year.
Above is the video they created using real photos and video from Californians who got married, as well as their families, friends, co-workers and neighbors. It's amazing. And Regina Spektor's brilliant "Fidelity" is the perfect accompaniment.
Find out more at CourageCampaign.org, or just watch above and get teary-eyed.
Amy Ray & Jennifer O'Connor Interview - NewNowNext NOISE
Indigo Girl Amy Ray and singer/songwriter Jennifer O'Connor are both amazing artists -- and they both happen to be "out." They toured around the US this past fall and winter, doing many shows together, and some apart. Along the way, we snagged them for a quick interview, letting these two authentic, talented, integrity-driven performers talk about making music, addressing queerness in their work, and surviving life on the road. Watch the results, above! (And pay no mind to that weird hole in the wall...)
Amy's just wrapped up a bunch of shows with the Indigo Girls, but Jen's still on the road. Catch one of her amazing shows! And catch videos from both of them after the jump!
Black was greeted with standing o's by the crowd and had this to say: "We need to dream bigger than Proposition 8... I’m a child of Harvey Milk, and I’m a child of the movies. Those two things can inspire a guy to dream big."
Need some sweetness this morning? How about Ra Ra Riot's valentine "Can You Tell"? Cutest indie band ever, or what?
They're touring in the U.K. now, supporting their latest, The Rhumb Line, but they hit North America with some Canadian dates starting next week, and then they bop around America all spring.
Lots of fuss over Jennifer Hudson's heart-stopping performance at the Grammy Awards last night. The girl's been through it! And she took home a trophy for Best R&B Album. Big new Brit Adele snagged the Best New Artist prize, besting the Jonas Brothers who hit the stage with Stevie Wonder. (Why not?)
Best Supporting Vlog, Episode 6: Extra-Mysterious Edition!
Why the film noir look? This week's Best Supporting Vlog is all about "Mystery!!!" as Liz and John try and decipher what the Academy president Sid Ganis meant when he said the Oscars would be "truly different" this year. Ganis told the folks at the annual Oscar Luncheon that this year's show would be a shocker, and implied that they'd better expect big suprises and weirdness! What the heck was he talking about?
Thus our crafty little disguises... Plus we discuss this past week's Oscar luncheon (What's the diff between lunch and "luncheon" anyway? Fancy hats?), what Hugh Jackman might do onstage and other weirdness! WATCH BELOW!!!
Clint + Amy = Clint Michigan (Photo by Philipp Mohr)
Do you like sweet, melodic, kinda sparse, strummy, beautifully crafted and dramatically smart/sad indie music? Clint Michigan are a Brooklyn-based duo comprised of Clint Asay (formerly of the genius gay-NYC foursome The Isotoners) and Amy Bezunartea. Their debut album, Hawthorne to Hennepin, is due on April 14th from Kiam Records (owned/operated by singer-songwriter Jennifer O'Connor).
You can hear a few songs at their MySpace page. It's perfect for a wintry weekend. The band has already played gigs with the likes of Joel Gibb (The Hidden Cameras), Scott Matthew (Shortbus) and Hotel Lights, and guests on the new album include Kenny Mellman (Kiki & Herb), Scott Matthew, Pinky Weitzman and other talented NY'ers.
You'll be hearing more from them. They're really very good. And they're working on a video! More to come!
I'm stretching the truth a little with that headline, but not much. Watch the viral video that the Kevin Connolly, Justin Long & Bradley Cooper star in to promote He's Just Not That Into You, opening today. It's meant to ease straight guys' fears about seeing a chick flick, but the result is kinda gay. And actually, sweet!
The moment that starts at about 2:45 is my fave and it's kinda hot. Or maybe that's just my lively imagination picturing a Bradley Cooper/Justin Long hookup. Anyway... Watch it. I'm just that into it. (sorry)
To answer your first question, "Who's Clementine Ford?" She's Cybill Shepherd's daughter (Work! Cybill rules.) and she's been starring on The L Word (along with her mom) as frisky student Molly. Ford served up her coming out news to the UK's lesbian mag, Diva.
You know Mama Cybill is already starting up a new Hollywood PFLAG chapter. She's so rambunctious and gay-loving! And now Samantha Ronson has someone to date once Li-Lo moves on.
Mercy. Here's a very gay way to start to your day:
Theatre icons Charles Busch, Whoopi Goldberg and Lypsinka will star in the first-ever New York presentation of the infamous Broadway-play-that-wasn’t, LEGENDS!. This legendary catfight was written by Pulitzer-Prize and Tony-Award winner James Kirkwood (A Chorus Line), and will be presented in a special one-night-only staged reading benefit on Monday evening, March 23 at 8PM at Town Hall. Out star of Mad Men, Bryan Batt will also star.
