2011 VMAs Highlights: Beyonce Is Pregnant, Lady Gaga Is a Man & Adele Sings! Plus, Best Tweets!

Last night's big 3: Lady Gaga as Jo Calderone, Beyonce rubs 2030's Best New Artist winner and Adele just gives us a song.

Last night at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards: Lady Gaga opened the show dragged up as her male alter-ego Jo Calderone, and kept the performance up all night long, even at her seat and backstage - and win she won Best Female Video (for "Born This Way").

Beyonce actually outshone Gaga when it came to show buzz, though. She took the VMAs as the platform to announce that she's pregnant, confirming the speculation by a tummy rub/bump reveal at the end of her classy, brassy, blazer-clad old-school rendition of "Love on Top." (Watch the full performance below.)

Yes, kids. She's having a baby! Via MTV.tumblr.com.

And amid all the wacky outfits, posing, bluster and onstage babble (from presenters and winners) the other big standout moment of the night was the simplest: Adele, standing by a piano as she belted out her gorgeous ballad "Someone Like You." For some performers, it's still all about the song and the voice (thank goodness!). Watch Adele's performance below.

After the jump, see Gaga's opening monologue and "You and I" performance (watch out for spilled beer), photos from the show, and see some of last night's best VMA-inspired Tweets!

Here's Beyonce's full "Love on Top" performance and her smiling tummy rub at the end!

And Adele, gorgeously serving up "Someone Like You":

Response was divided about Lady Gaga's VMA man-drag. At first, I thought she was trying a bit too hard with this little piece of "theater." But as she kept up the schtick all night (Yep, no 9,000 costume changes!) it grew on me. Big ups to her for trying a new thang and sticking with it. "Jo" even tried to get smoochy onstage with Britney Spears. Which didn't really happen.

And Gaga accepting the VMA for "Best Female Video" as Jo Calderone.

One big consensus? Gaga was totally channeling '80s Ralph Macchio with her masculine look. In fact, Macchio even ended up trending on Twitter as a result!

Also, great about Gaga's "Jo Calderone" delivery: The audience response shots of "WTF?" As MuuMuse blogger Bradley Stern tweeted...

There was a lot of this:

And then this onstage:

And in other fun Tweets from the night???

Sandra Bernhard weighed in on the oddly awkward moments leading out to every commercial break, which featured Jessie J singing covers of pop songs to the in-house VMA audience. And she was sitting in a chair wearing a cast.

Awwww, well she tried.

Jessie J, being the good, wounded soldier during the VMAs last night.

And about "Best HipHop Video" winner Nicki Minaj's rousingly jumbled look...

Nicki Minaj, low-key as always.

Tweeter @TaLLon7 put it nicely:

Some Twitter commentary came from unlikely places. Who knew that pulp-novel queen Jackie Collins would be into the VMAs?

Oh, and some viewers were NOT amused by the VMA presence and award-winning by some artists known to be homophobic, notably Odd Future and its frontman Tyler the Creator.

Still, it was sort of nice to see Tyler the Creator's mom freaking out over her son's success, much like any proud mama.

Katy Perry won two VMA awards, for Best Pop Video for "Firework" and for Best Collaboration for "ET" with Kanye West. And for her second onstage award-moment she showed big love to the dairy industry?

Hmmmmmmm... Ya think?

And about that hurricane over the weekend? Not really a factor, except...

Awwww, bummer!

And finally... Just some nice props to Kreayshawn for rocking a look! Love her.

She's giving us the mouse that roared!!!! More VMA red-carpet photos for dayz at MTV.com.

And I'll leave you with just a gorgeous shot of that lovely Adele moment from the show. Mwaaaaahhhhh!
