21 University Students Arrested In Nigeria For Engaging In Gay Sex

“We had it on good authority that the male students allegedly engaged in anal sex."

At least 21 university students have been arrested in Nigeria for engaging in gay sex acts.

According to The Punch, it was "reliably gathered" that the two state-owned universities where the suspects were arrested "were a beehive of perverse sexual acts as male students engage in same sex activities for financial gains."

“We had it on good authority that the male students allegedly engaged in anal sex" says Celestina Kalu, Police Public Relations Officer in the state. "The suspects, upon interrogation, made useful statements to the police while investigations are ongoing.”

Human rights watchdog site 76 Crimes weighed in, nothing that “Nigerian newspapers often report on alleged arrests of LGBTI people, but almost never report on any subsequent steps in the legal process, such as trials, acquittal and release, or conviction and sentencing. On investigation, some such reports have turned out to be total fabrications."

The continued: "The Punch article also reiterated two myths about homosexuality that are common in Nigeria and elsewhere — that people adopt a homosexual orientation for financial gain and that homosexuality is a result of cult activity.”

In 2014, former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan pushed through the Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act, which effectively banned gay marriage in Nigeria and criminalized public displays of affection by gay couples. The act also imposes harsh penalties on any organizations advocating for gay rights or running gay clubs, societies, processions or meetings. Any civilian in violation of these laws can be imprisoned for up to 14 years.
