25 Great Gay Sex Scenes from Modern Movies

25 Great Gay Movie Sex Scenes

Back in 2007, we ran an article called Gay Sex Scenes that Made Movie History. A delightfully naughty exploration of firsts and foresk- … er, foremosts in terms of gay male intimacy on the silver screen, it celebrated some of the films that blew the celluloid closet to bits, one modesty sock at a time.

Six years later, it’s shocking just how far pop culture has come in terms of normalizing gay characters and stories, and how much bolder the gay film audience has grown in demanding films that speak truthfully to their sexual experience (though, it must be said, the films that answer the call are usually decidedly outside of the mainstream). So we’ve decided to bring you an update to our foundational piece that looks at what has happened since. Of course, since most of the ground breaking was done over the last four decades or so, our focus is slightly different this time around: we are here to celebrate the gay sex scenes from modern films (within the last decade) that deserve a watch for their blistering hotness, their heart-tugging romance, or simply because they are completely insane.

While the original gay movie sex scenes article focused on films that enjoyed a wide release in U.S. theaters, this updated list takes into account the sea change in film distribution that has occurred in recent years. With streaming services, on demand and DVD-by-mail services changing the distribution model, smaller and more targeted niche films are easier to find than ever. As such, we’ll be including films (both U.S. and foreign) that didn’t receive a wide theatrical release but which have been readily available elsewhere.

Oh – and one final note: to avoid duplication and pack as many sexytimes as possible onto these pages, we are deliberately omitting films discussed in the original piece, no matter how obviously essential they may be (I’m looking at unquittable you, Jack Twist). Chances are, if you don’t see one of your faves here, it’s already been covered. If not, share it in the comments!

In no particular order…

25. David’s Birthday (2009)

This Italian melodrama takes the anguish of Matteo, a formerly straight man falling in love with his friend’s handsome son David to literally operatic proportions. The film boasts two extremely steamy scenes set to classical music – and one of them even ends in a suitably over-the-top tragic death. The two scenes (which really serve as two bookended parts of the same scene) are jaw-droppingly racy – especially when, after having been interrupted in the middle of sex with David by his wife, Matteo doesn’t have the sense to stop thrusting as he pleads with her for her understanding. Strange film, but undeniably hot scenes.

24. I Love You, Phillip Morris (2009)

Wow. Boasting one of the biggest Hollywood stars on this list – Jim Carrey – the opening scene of this based-on-true-events romp is as in-your-face as an attempted mainstream release gets. Audacious, unapologetic, and apparently too much for nervous executives to handle – the film ultimately was dumped into a handful of theaters despite its big-name stars and rave notices.

23. Shelter (2007)

Ah, Shelter – one of the most beloved gay romances of recent years, it also features a rhapsodically sweet love scene the first time that its gay surfer dude lovers (Brad Rowe and Trevor Wright) seal the deal. Here’s the scene (mildly NSFW):

22. Pornography: A Thriller (2009)

Okay, Pornography (the movie, that is) isn’t for everyone – it’s kind of the Blue Velvet of the gay porn underworld subgenre. But it is legitimately creepy, and features a few highly unsettling sex scenes – one of which depicts the filming of a gay porn in what might be one of the circles of hell.

21. Little Ashes (2008)

It’s always interesting when a current Hollywood It-Boy decides to go gay to bank some artistic cred. In Little Ashes, Twilight star Robert Pattinson fooled around with a fella while telling the story of Salvador Dali and Federico Garcia Lorca. While they never go all the way, their rooftop scene will be enough to send most Twi-hards into fits.

20. BearCity (2010)

This sex comedy set in the world of ursine-identified gay men offers plenty of eye candy. But the most notable scene is one where a heftier fella and his younger boyfriend – who loves his man’s size – get frisky. It’s refreshing to see a gay film objectify something other than the presumed physical ideal.

19. Shortbus (2006)

John Cameron Mitchell’s real sex experiment was a mixed bag, but when it worked it managed to get to some real truths about sex and intimacy. One of the most notable scenes featured a three-way between a gay couple (Paul Dawson and PJ Deboy) and a new friend (Jay Brannan) that is at once sexy, thrilling, awkward, charming, and hilarious. Plus, when’s the last time you saw a man sing “The National Anthem” into another man’s backside? Actually, don’t answer that – let’s keep a little mystery, shall we?

18. Shank (2008)

Oh my. Certainly not for everyone, Shank sets out to shock and appall from the opening scene, where two men do drugs in a car and have sex in the woods before one beats and robs the other. It kind of goes downhill from there. But at the center of this maelstrom of sex, sadism and misery is a frank love scene between the central thug and his new lover. Unfortunately, though, the film is most notable for its violent and disturbing climax, where the antihero is raped by his best friend while his lover is forced to watch. Notable if only for showing just how low things can go.

17. Dream Boy (2008)

This slight coming-of-age indie already feels a bit dated, but the first love scene between its central characters – two men coming of age in the American South – is tender and true. Bonus: It takes place on a schoolbus, fulfilling the fantasies of millions of former rural schoolboys everywhere.

16. Eyes Wide Open (2009)

This tale of forbidden love within the community of Orthodox Jews in Israel is a wonderfully slow burn, beautifully capturing the many cultural forces and personal issues at work when two men fall in love in a world entirely opposed to it. The first love scene between the two men is notable because they are both completely clothed – not that it diminishes the intensity of the scene in the least.

15. Chillerama (2011, Segment: “I Was a Teenage Werebear”)

Werebear is interesting for several reasons. First, it’s a full-on gay romance set inside an otherwise totally straight (and at some points aggressively so) horror/comedy anthology film. Second, it stars gay porn actor Brent Corrigan (as Sean Paul Lockhart) in his first starring non-sex role. And it’s also a musical. While mid-grade raunch is the name of the game in this splatter comedy, there is a gay sex scene to be had as well, when the main werebear gets bloody revenge on a locker room bully by… um… raping him to death. Okay, that’s awful, but it’s actually not as horrific as it sounds – and as the inspiration for the film was crappy teen beach horror movies from the ’60s, it’s played more for laughs than anything.

14. Undertow (2009)

This wonderful Peruvian film is an odd, endearing blend of love story and ghost story about a married fisherman with a male lover on the side living in a small, traditional village. The scenes between the two men are wonderfully tender, particularly a classic seaside love scene where they tumble down a sand dune in a lovers’ embrace.

13. Strapped (2010)

If you only see one gay-hustler-stuck-in-metaphysical-purgatory movie this year, make it Strapped. The film is incredibly well-observed and restrained for a movie that is entirely about sex in all its forms, and its many sex scenes are tasteful yet utterly captivating. Sexy without being sleazy, it’s worth checking out.

12. Redwoods (2009)

11. Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds (2006)

Gay guys with crushes on straight guys are gay movie canon – and Eating Out 2 is notable for taking the idea a step further by having our hero fake a gay porn shoot in order to get some action from the hunky physique model from his art class. I think. I was too busy worrying that someone was going to cut themselves on Marco Dapper’s chin to care.

Here’s the scene in its steamy yet still rather tame glory:

10. From Beginning to End (2009)

Where to begin with From Beginning to End… well, for starters, it’s a story about two half-brothers who are in love with one another from a very early age. And one is an aspiring Olympic swimmer. So you can’t really blame the other one, right? Seriously, though, this controversial Brazilian drama handles the subject matter much more deftly than one might expect – and the result is a moving, challenging film that features some very intense, extremely passionate love scenes.

9. Weekend (2011)

Weekend tells the story of a one-night stand that overstays its welcome in the best possible way. The sex scenes are naturalistic, raw, and charged with emotion – which no doubt contributes to the film’s popularity.

8. Private Romeo (2011)

A sweet retelling of Romeo and Juliet in a military academy, Private Romeo’s love scene may be chaste by comparison to some of the other entries on this list, but it is undeniably sweet – especially since we’re talking about a re-envisioning of one of the most classic love stories ever told in one of the last frontiers for openly gay men and women.

7. Love Songs (2007)

Love Songs is unique for several reasons. One, while its lead character begins the film dating a woman, he unexpectedly switches teams midway through the film. Another, the lovers burst into song at key moments throughout the story, as in the steamy scene where the two men get down to business.

6. Shame (2011)

Michael Fassbender’s much-hyped full-frontal nudity may have been the highlight of this morose meditation on sex addiction, but it’s also notable for a scene in which Fassbender’s character, having hit rock bottom, visits a gay sex club for some oral gratification. The scene is brief and a bit of a footnote, but it’s notable that the story opted to go that route at all.

5. BrĂ¼no (2009)

Love it or hate it, Sacha Baron Cohen and Larry Charles’ follow-up to their massive breakout hit Borat is as daring as mainstream comedy gets. At its best, the film used satire to expose the ridiculousness behind fear of gay intimacy and gay people. At its worst, it was just blisterlingly funny in all the wrong ways. Case in point: the title character’s insanely over-the-top hotel room romp with Diesel, which involved a fire extinguisher, a giant slingshot, a hand-vacuum, and the most inspired champagne bottle cozy in film history. Here it is, in its ridiculous, fake-censored but still probably very NSFW glory:

4. Ciao (2008)

Okay, to be fair, Ciao doesn’t technically have a sex scene – but the emotional climax features what may be one of the longest, most passionate kisses – gay or straight – we’ve ever seen in a movie. It’s amazing.

3. Noah’s Arc: Jumping the Broom(2008)

It was fun to see Logo’s series jump to the big screen, especially since it meant that the love scenes could play out a bit longer. Grooms-to-be Noah and Wade raised the collective temperature of Martha’s Vineyard with their pre-nup sex scene.

1. Boy Culture (2006)

Considering that Boy Culture is 90 minutes of foreplay, it’s probably okay to forgive the fact that when its two reluctant lovers seal the deal, they do it off screen. Still, when the sparks eventually do fly between Darryl Stephens and Derek Magyar, it’s best to hide the flammables.
