As you know, I don’t think M.I.A.’s “Bad Girls” deserves an MTV Video Music Awards nomination for Video of the Year. But it got one anyway.
After thinking about it (far too much), I’ve decided to create my own list of “second opinion nominees.” If I ran the Video Music Awards, then this is who would be nominated for the top prize. (And by the way, I’m totally willing to oversee the VMAs. If anyone wants to give me the job, just tweet me!)
Before we begin, just a reminder that the actual nominees are “Bad Girls,” “Take Care” by Drake ft. Rihanna, “We Found Love” by Rihanna, “Wide Awake” by Katy Perry, and “Somebody That I Used to Know” by Gotye ft. Kimbra.
And now, my Second Opinion Nominees…
(1) “Somebody That I Used to Know” by Gotye feat. Kimbra
I agree with MTV on this one. This video is amazing.
(2) “Countdown” by Beyonce
I’m still mad that “Countdown” didn’t become a bigger hit. It’s such an incredible song! And the video is just as good, as the Snuggie kid would certainly agree.
(3) “Paradise” by Coldplay
A simple, silly concept about a guy in an elephant suit becomes a surprisingly poignant story about finding the crowd where you belong. This video made me love this song.
(4) “Little Talks” by Of Monsters and Men
I’ve been riding for Of Monsters and Men since the spring, and I continue to love their music. This video, with its surreal images and sprightly energy, continues to delight.
(5) “I Hate My Job” by JbDubs
Who? I know, I know… but hear me out. JbDubs is a professional ballet dancer who moonlights as a club musician, and this video is proof that he should keep on moonlighting. The choreography is sickening, the men are hot, and the song itself is obscenely catchy. EAT IT.
