5 Powerful and Provocative New Must-See Plays in NYC

Don't sleep on these significantly stimulating shows off-Broadway.

What the Constitution Means to Me, as its title might suggest, is Broadway’s timeliest new ticket. But there are plenty of other thought-provoking crowd-pleasers now making their New York premieres off-Broadway.

Check out these five plays that recently opened for limited engagements.

Ain’t No Mo’

Joan Marcus

Black Americans are literally getting out in Jordan E. Cooper’s penetrative and vital satire about a mass Trump-era exodus. Cooper also slays in drag as Peaches, a queer airport gate attendant expediting the departure.

Public Theater through May 5.

Do You Feel Anger?

Carol Rosegg

In Mara Nelson-Greenberg’s searing surrealist comedy, an empathy coach tries to enlighten a debt collection agency terrorized by toxic masculinity. Justin Long plays a dick who’s dangerously out of touch with his emotions.

Vineyard Theatre through April 27.

June Is the First Fall

Maria Baranova

Tradition and queerness clash in Yilong Liu’s poignant drama. Alton Alburo stars as a young gay New Yorker returning home to visit his estranged Chinese family in Hawaii, where he confronts daddy issues and an old crush.

Yangtze Rep at New Ohio Theatre through April 20.

Mrs. Murray’s Menagerie

Ben Arons

The Mad Ones and director Lila Neugebauer mine the mundanity of a parent focus group for 1970s children’s TV programs, but interplay between the strangers subtly unfurls keen commentary on race, gender, and class.

Ars Nova at Greenwich House through May 11.

Nantucket Sleigh Ride

T. Charles Erickson

As a one-hit playwright, John Larroquette is a commanding anchor for the great John Guare’s engrossing maelstrom of a memory play, helmed by Jerry Zaks. Adam Chanler-Berat and Will Swenson co-star.

LCT’s Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater through May 5.
