5 Things You Should Know About K-Pop Group BTS

The South Korean boy band is making pop music history in the U.S.

At this month's Billboard Music Awards, the nominees for Top Social Artist included Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber, and Shawn Mendes. But none of those well-known American acts took home the award.

For the second year in a row, K-pop boy band BTS graciously accepted the honor.

If you've seen "BTS" appear in articles on your news feeds a lot lately, you should. The superstar K-pop group is grabbing headlines because their new album Love Yourself: Tear is dominating the pop music scene, becoming the first K-pop album to ever top the Billboard 200 albums chart.

On top of that, the pop sensations also scored the highest Hot 100 debut ever for a K-pop group with their new single, "Fake Love." In less than two weeks, the accompanying music video for the single garnered over 120 million views on YouTube.

In case you've somehow missed the BTS frenzy so far, here are five things you should know about the group. It's probably a good idea to get up to speed, because at this rate, it doesn't look like they'll be slowing down very soon.

What does BTS mean, and who are its members?

BTS is an acronym for the Korean term "Bangtan Songyeondan" or "bulletproof boy scouts" in English. The group has three rappers (RM, Suga, and J-Hope) and four singers (Jin, Jimin, V, Jungkook).

The group has championed LGBTQ acceptance and visibility.

In 2013, RM praised Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' hit "Same Love" tweeting: "This is a song about homosexuality. The song is twice as good when I listen to the lyrics." It's important to note that the rapper shared this at the beginning of the band's career when they had the most to lose. Earlier this year, the entertainer recommended "Strawberries and Cigarettes," a song penned by openly gay singer Troye Sivan for the gay film, Love, Simon.

Their social media followers are loyal.

For two years in a row, the band's been named Billboard's top social artist. This is surely due to their dedicated fans they call "the army." The group's success on social has helped the group spend nearly a year on top of Billboard's Social 50 chart, a global ranking of the most popular artists across online platforms. And their fans help them beyond selling records. They also help them raise money for causes.

When BTS partnered with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and Star Wars earlier this month, BTS fans brought in $1 million in less than two days for the campaign to feed malnourished children. Star Wars even thanked them.

They are shattering records.

According to Billboard, BTS' "Fake Love" single is the first K-pop track to reach the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. Their album, Love Yourself: Tear is the first world music album to hit the top spot of the Billboard 200 and the first foreign language album to do so in over a decade.

The U.S. leg of their tour is already sold out. Sorry!

The group's upcoming world tour will bring them to the U.S. and Canada before going on to the U.K., Netherlands, Germany, and France. All 14 North America dates are already sold out, including the opening four consecutive concerts at the 21,000-seat Staples Center.
