7 Gay-Fave Movies Being Turned Into Broadway Musicals

From queer cult classics to the Great White Way.

Every now and then, a movie comes along that checks all the right boxes to become a gay classic. But if there's one thing we love more than a good movie, it's a good musical. So when the two come together, it's a match in theater-world heaven.

Below, we take a look at seven gay-fave films being turned into stage musicals.

First Wives Club

Paramount Pictures/ First Wives Club

A stage musical based on the 1996 comedy starring Bette Midler, Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn, premiered in Chicago in 2015, starring Faith Prince, Christine Sherrill and Carmen Cusack.

With a book by Designing Women creator Linda Bloodworth-Thomason and music by Motown songwriters Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland, a transfer to the Great White Way could still be in the works.

The Devil Wears Prada

The Devil Wears Prada/20th Century Fox

Earlier this year Fox Stage Productions announce a musical adaptation of the Meryl Streep classic was on the way, with Elton John composing and Paul Rudnick doing the book. The show will reportedly include elements from both the movie and Lauren Weisberger's original Roman á clef novel.

Mean Girls

Paramount Pictures/ Mean Girls

Written by Tina Fey with original music by Fey’s husband, Jeff Richmond, and lyrics by Legally Blonde tunesmith Nell Benjamin, this musical adaptaiton just made its debut in Washington, D.C. The show opens March 12, 2018, at Broadway's August Wilson Theater.

Mommie Dearest

A musical version of the Joan Crawford biopic is inching its way closer to New York: Out of the Box Theatrics recently hosted a staged reading of the show, with a book by Christina Crawford herself and music by David Nehls (The Great American Trailer Park Musical).

Moulin Rouge

20th Century Fox/ Moulin Rouge

'Cause they can-can-can! A pre-Broadway engagement of Moulin Rouge! The Musical is set for Boston in summer 2018, with a book by John Logan, whose play Red received a record six Tony nominations. The show is being directed by Alex Timbers and with choreography by Sonya Tayeh.

The drag road pic is the latest gay fave to be transformed into a stage musical: Douglas Carter Beane, who made his screenwriting debut with the '95 film, is collaborating with composer Lewis Flinn (Die Mommie Die!, The Little Dog Laughed) on the recently announced project.

Romy and Michele's High School Reunion

Premiering the summer in Seattle, the musical adaptation of the Mira Sorvino-Lisa Kudrow comedy was written by the Romy and Michelle screenwriter Robin Schiff with music and lyrics by Orange Is the New Black composers Gwendolyn Sanford and Brandon Jay.
