78,000 March For Equality At Taipei Pride

Taiwan is thought to be the first Asian country that will legalize same-sex marriage.

On Saturday, nearly 80,000 people attended Taipei Pride, the biggest such event in Asia.

The parade, which went through Ketagalan Boulevard in Taiwan's capital, included LGBT families, social groups, activists, politicians, religious organizations and representatives from corporations like Google, Hewlett Packard and JP Morgan.

“There’s been huge changes in the society in recent years with a lot of grassroot efforts pushing for equality,” said out gay candidate Jennifer Lu.

“But the government hasn’t kept pace. That’s why I want to run.”

A marriage equality bill is being studied in the Taiwanese parliament, and Democratic Progressive Party leader Tsai Ing-wen, odds-on favorite to be the next president, supports the cause.

In a Facebook video she shared today, Tsai said: “Everyone is equal before love.”
