8 Best Gay Beaches In America: NewNowNext Travel

A trip to the beach is usually about chilling, soaking up the sun and avoiding work, but almost all of the time it is about checking out sexy bodies. Shallow? Hey, if you want depth, read a book.

Below, surf through our list of the 8 Best Gay Beaches in America

Fire Island Pines

Sayville, New York

Fire Island is, essentially, one long strand of white sand fronting the rolling waves of the Atlantic. Come summer, it’s also New York City’s unofficial gay playground. The beach is an extension of that mentality, and is packed with eye candy that may or may not be wearing a bathing suit.

Both the Pines and nearby Cherry Grove offer great beaches, but the Pines is less likely to include kids and families.

Sebastian Beach

Fort Lauderdale, FL

Located near the gay resorts, Sebastian Street is a low-key but popular destination for queer locals and tourists alike (mostly men).  Miami is nice, but Lauderdale is where it is at right now—with Sebastian Beach closest to all the hotels.

Herring Cove Beach

Provincetown, MA

If Provincetown is the gay Promised Land, then Herring Cove is our Red Sea, with an invisible line separating the men and women's areas.  You'll have to trudge through the dunes and marshes by foot to get there, but its safe enough to lean your bike against along the road and pick it up later.

La Playita

San Juan, Puerto Rico

East of Old San Juan, the sandy expanse near Calle Vendig and the Atlantic Beach Hotel is popular with gay sun-worshippers.

Will Rogers Beach

Santa Monica, CA

Nicknamed “Ginger Rogers," Will Rogers is conveniently located just off the Pacific Coast Highway near the intersection of West Channel Road. You'll find a good cross-section of L.A.'s LGBT subcultures represented here, as well as some clueless-but-harmless straight families.

Black's Beach

San Diego, CA

Probably the most famous nude beach in America, Black’s is also one of San Diego’s most popular gay destinations. Imagine that.

Little Beach

Maui, HI

Gay and lesbians converge on “Little Beach” in Makena State Park, about a mile past the Maui Prince Hotel. It's so secluded that you have to hike up a lava-flow trail to get to it.

The first clue you've made it: The guys letting it all hang out in the Hawaiian sun.

North Lido Beach

Sarasota, FL

If you look to the beach for some much-needed serenity, the white sands of North Lido are a great option. It's secluded, but close enough to the shops and eateries of St. Armand's Circle that you won't have to get in the car.  Come in the fall: Sarasota holds its annual Pridefest in October, when the heat is less oppressive.
