The 7 Most Outrageous Moments From The VMAs Red Carpet

It's outside the show where things really get wild.

MTV's Video Music Awards are just a few days away. But sometimes the show's craziest moments happen outside the auditorium. Below we salute seven of the most outrageous moments on the VMAs red carpet.

Watch for more red carpet insantiy on the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards, airing Sunday, August 27, at 8/7c on Logo and MTV.

Rose McGowan gets into heavy metal

Back in 1998, Rose McGowan was still dating Marilyn Manson, which may explain why she wore... this.

Here it is from behind.

Many have carried on the legacy of chain-mail gown, including Amber Rose in 2014.

But no one does it like Rose did.

Macy Gray spells it out

Macy Gray has never been a fan of subtlety. In fact, she once released a love song about her trusty vibrator. So it should be no surprise that when she went to the 2001 VMAs she had zero qualms about promoting her new album, The Id.

Like, really, none at all.

All eyes were on this don diva at the 1999 VMAs, when she walked the red carpet in an electric-purple sequin jumpsuit that scooped below her left boob.

It led to an even more outrageous moment on stage when Diana Ross, presenting the Best Hip-Hop Video with Kim and Mary J. Blige, jiggled Kim's bresticle.

Mary did not look impressed.

Lady Gaga brings Kermit the Frog as her "date"

Before delivering a career-defining performance of "Paparazzi" at the 2009 VMAs, Mother Monster stepped on the red carpet with her Muppet date.

The two even shared a good luck kiss. Miss Piggy was allegedly not too pleased.

The "Drag Race" queens pay tribute to VMAs goddesses past

You wanna talk meta? At the 2016 VMAs, the queens of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 2 sashayed down the red carpet in outfits inspired by some of the VMAs most iconic outfits, from Madonna's "Like a Virgin" debut to Britney's snake-wrangling ensemble.

Courtney Love interrupts Madonna

While being interviewed by Kurt Loder about Ray of Light in 1995, Madonna suddenly became aware that someone was throwing things at her from below.

That someone was Courtney Love, chucking objects from her purse up at the Material Girl.

MTV

After Kurt invited Courtney up to the set, Madonna uttered eight words that will forever live in infamy: "Courtney Love is in dire need of attention."

What came next was nearly eight minutes of the most beautifully awkward and unstaged television we can remember. Courtney probably didn't know where she was, but Madonna was, shall we say, not impressed. It's clear there was some kind of schism between the two, as Courtney hazily attempts to accuse Madge of shit-talkin'.

MTV

The interview ends with Courtney on the floor, refusing to sit up in Madonna's seat. "I don't want to sit in your chair," she protested. "It's like a throne." (Well, duh.)
