As if we needed more proof that hookup apps have become a ubiquitous part of gay culture, a new study reveals that four out of five gay men report they found their current partners on Grindr, Scruff, Tinder and the like.

According to a study published in AIDS and Behavior, gay men have been profoundly affected by the Internet and smartphones: In 2001, barely 14% of us met our mate online. In 2014 that number rose to 80%.

The report—which also shows a rapid decline in the number of guys meeting each other in bars, clubs and bathhouses—is leading safer-sex campaigners to rethink their strategies and assumptions.

It's been assumed, for example, that men who use hookup apps are more promiscuous. But sociology professor Garrett Presage says that's faulty reasoning because almost everyone is meeting partners that way.

"If they’re comparing it with men who don’t use apps," Presage says, "they’re comparing men who are sexually active with those who are not."
