95-Year-Old World War II Vet And 67-Year-Old Vietnam Vet Get Hitched In VA Home's First Same-Sex Wedding

Relationship goals!

Today we learned of the awesome 95-year-old World War II veteran and his boyfriend of 20 years, a 67-year-old Vietnam veteran, who marked history at the senior living facility where they live by tying the knot in the home’s first-ever same-sex wedding.

John Banvard and Gerard Nadeau told Fox 5 in 2013 that they were inspired to get hitched by the California Supreme Court overturning the Defense of Marriage Act. “We were waiting on the Supreme Court to make that decision,” said Banvard.

The couple chose to have their ceremony in a courtyard at the Veterans Home of Chula Vista, California so they could keep it among friends. Though their crowd was filled mostly with supporters, a few naysayers were there in disapproval.

“The world is changing, we have to go along with it,” said one guest. “I just know that it’s against my faith and my religion, but as Americans they have a right to do what they want to do,” another added.

“It’s been somewhat controversial, facility director Neal Asper told Fox 5. He said a town hall meeting was held at the VA home to discuss the concerns of other residents.

“I told them, they have the right to get married here just like everybody else,” he said.

Congratulations, John and Gerard!
