A Dragged-Up Perfume Genius Rocked Coachella With Live Version Of "Queen"

Out musician Perfume Genius (a.k.a. Mike Hadreas) took his avant-pop-rock smorgasbord to the Indio Valley on Saturday, performing songs from his acclaimed album Too Bright at Coachella.

The centerpiece of the set was his gay anthem, "Queen," that Hadreas wrote in reaction to his anger over the "gay panic" that still grips much of America.

Taking the stage dragged out in a black shirtdress, fishnets and heels, Hadreas sauntered around the stage as the song's driving guitars and percussion accompanied.

"Queen" has possibly the best line of any song last year—"No family is safe when I sashay"—and Hadreas takes negative stereotypes about gay people—weakness, "riddled with disease," etc—and makes them emblems of power.

Talking with Vice, Hadreas summed up his motivation to "scare straight people": "If you're gonna be scared, do that, 'cause I'm gonna be even more gay later and even worse and more disgusting and scary than you ever thought."

Boom.
