A Majority Of Americans Disapprove Of The Supreme Court’s Marriage Equality Decision, Poll Shows

Opinion polls have continually shown more and more Americans support marriage equality—a majority now, in fact.

But an upsetting new poll reveals that a majority of people in this country actually disapprove of the recent SCOTUS ruling on same-sex marriage.

The survey, conducted by Associated Press-GfK,  revealed that 41% of respondents disapproved of the high court’s ruling, while 39% approved.

A slim margin, especially when 18% were undecided, but disappointing nonetheless.

The news gets worse from there:

* 56% of respondents said it’s more important for the government to protect religious liberties than LGBT equality. (39% said it’s more important to protect the rights of gays.)

* Broken down by party affiliation, Democrats said it was more important for the government to protect gay rights, 64% to to 32%. Republicans said  religious liberties was more important than gay rights, 82%-17%. (Real shocker there.)

* 59% says wedding-related businesses should be allowed to deny services to same-sex couples.

* 46% said businesses in general should be allowed to discriminate against gays on religious grounds.

Oddly, those polled approved of marriage equality in their own state, 42% to 40%.
