A Queer Trans Guy Checks His Singing Voice One Year After Starting T

Mitch is no "American Idiot."

Voice changes are a major consideration for transgender people on hormone-replacement therapy (HRT)—especially if you're a trans guys who sings. Testosterone increases the size of the vocal cords, which lowers the pitch of your voice. (It's been equated to a kind of "second puberty.")

In a recent Tumblr post, Mitch, a 20-year-old queer trans guy from Iowa, demonstrated the effects T had on his voice by posting two side-by-side videos of himself singing Green Day's "American Idiot." The first one is from May 21, 2016, and the second was posted on Sunday.

"I took a few videos of me singing Green Day songs a year ago today," writes Mitch in the recent clip, adding that, at the time, he'd only been on testosterone for about a month. "I decided to sing one of them today [too], so I could make a comparison, since I’m just a little over a year on testosterone."

The difference is striking—and Mitch still sounds great, despite his disclaimer that he "wasn't warmed up at all."
