Activists Protest LGBT Police Officers Being Honored At Philadelphia Pride

"We are not going to tolerate police officers being honored in a parade that came out of a spirit of revolution."

A group of activists are demanding the Philadelphia Pride organization rescind its Grand Marshal offer to a local LGBT police group because it is "offensive" and "antithetical to the spirit and history of Pride."

The group, which calls itself Philadelphians Against Police As Pride Grand Marshals 2016, launched a petition this week urging staff and volunteers at Philly Pride Presents to consider the history of Pride when picking a new choice to be the annual Pride parade's Grand Marshal.

The group that believes honoring police officers at an event celebrating the LGBT activists who fought back against a corrupt and deeply anti-LGBT police force during the Stonewall riots in 1969 would be inappropriate.

As one activist puts it in the below interview with Fox 29, "Standing with officers is one thing, honoring them is another."

But Jo Mason, the transgender president of GOAL (Greater Philadelphia Gay Officer Action Leage), the police group being honored at next month's parade, sees things differently.

Mason told the station he considers the Grand Marshal invitation "an honor and a positive step," reminding viewers that the GOAL officers face "many of the same challenges and stand along with the LGBT community."

"I'm an LGBT community member first, it's who I am," said Mason. "I've been to the parade for years. It's my people, it's my community, it's where I want to be."
