Adam Rippon and His Boyfriend Were Called “F*ggots” While Holding Hands

"I'm very comfortable and very confident with who I am, and they're not," says the Olympic figure skater.

Not even America's Sweetheart is safe from homophobia.

Adam Rippon, Attitude's November coverboy, tells the U.K. magazine about the verbal abuse he recently endured with his Finnish boyfriend, Jussi-Pekka Kajaala.

"I was walking in New York City and was holding my boyfriend's hand," says the 28-year-old figure skater. "Some guy came up to us and said, 'I hate faggots,' then ran away. I just said, 'That's so sad that somebody would still want to do that.'"

The 2018 PyeongChang bronze medalist also recalls the online harassment he experienced while competing in the Winter Olympics.

"When I was at the Olympics, and this shouldn't be the case, but every time I got a tweet or a message that had an American flag in their name, I was always hesitant because it was almost always a nasty Trump supporter."

"It was always somebody who had something bad to say about me, which is awful because I was representing their country at the Olympics and I don't even want to open a message that has my own country's flag," the athlete continues. "It was always something nasty and it was always something homophobic, but it doesn't bother me because I'm very comfortable and very confident with who I am, and they're not."

"I’m lucky I can live out loud and use my voice," Rippon captions a post of his new Attitude cover on Instagram. "I’m lucky for all the people who came before me so that I’m able to be me. I’m lucky for all of the amazing people I have in my life. I don’t consider myself a hero but I am honored."

Rippon announced in August that Kajaala, whom he met last fall on Tinder, is relocating from Helsinki to L.A. soon, blaming the "bureaucratic process" for the delay. “The time apart is hard,” he says. “But we have a lot going on, so we make it work.”

The first openly gay man to qualify and win a medal for the U.S. Winter Olympics team, Rippon went on to win Dancing With the Stars: Athletes.

Rippon is currently a judge on ABC's Dancing With the Stars: Juniors.
