Katy Perry can have her Top 40 hits and Lady Gaga her endless slew of perfectly crafted catchy tunes, but there is little doubt that the current reigning queen of pop is one Adele Laurie Blue Adkins. Released earlier this year, her latest album 21 has topped every international album chart and, despite the constant onslaught of new releases, does not seem to be backing down. The only problem — no music videos.
While Perry and Gaga are content to put all their songs on film, Adele tends to shy away from releasing singles from her albums, making the debut of a new video from the captivating chanteuse all the more special.
Which brings us to the release of Adele’s second video from 21, “Someone Like You.” Adele was no doubt reluctant to film a video for the song but, following her powerhouse performances of the ballad at the BRIT Awards and more recently the MTV Music Video Awards, she had no choice. Within hours of her MTV performance the song topped almost every Records Chart as the singer managed to bring in even more fans with her tear-jerking tail of loss.
“Someone Like You” is a simple video, shot in black and white, and lacks the cotton candy confections or concentrated coreography of a Perry or Gaga video, but it may just be the best video of the year. Slowly walking for over four minutes as she reminisces on love lost, there is not one dull moment in this masterpiece.
A singer much in the vein of former greats such as Carole King and, in our opinion, Nick Drake, Adele once again proves she is, quite simply, the best with this new release.
And isn’t it nice to know that the best selling album of the year is, for once, the best album of the year?
