Adorable Olympic Gold Medalist Matthew Mitcham To Compete On "Dancing With The Stars"

Australian Olympic Games Diving Team Announcement

Olympic gold medalist Matthew Mitcham is set to star on the new season of Dancing With the Stars Australia.

The 27-year-old, cute-as-a-button diver revealed to Australian media yesterday that he's been wanting to shimmy his adorable self onto the show for about five years but couldn't commit, since he's been training for and competing in both the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games.

Mitcham is a trailblazer in his own right — he became one of Australia's first openly gay sports personalities after coming out in 2008, and his 2008 Olympic gold medal win made him the first Australian male to win an Olympic gold in diving since 1924.

He won't, however, be trailblazing the "same-sex dancing couple" narrative on DWTS.

His dancing partner will be Masha Belash, and despite heavy rumors in the Australian press, Mitcham says the idea of having a same-sex dancing couple "never really came up." "I'm not disappointed," he added.

"She’s an amazing teacher," Mitcham said of Belash. "Everyone keeps saying she is going to bust my balls, but so far she is just very eager and pushing me to do better."

The new Dancing With the Stars Australia season premiere has yet to be announced, but Mitcham has instructed fans to keep an eye on his Facebook page, where he'll be posting "lots of pictures and videos from behind the scenes."
