The Boys of Summer

-- Dorothy Snarker from AfterEllen.com

I like superhero movies. I really do. They're fun and fast and the costumes are faaaa-bulous. Straight men in stretchy fabric and capes – this is better than figure skating! This summer's heroic roster includes Iron Man, Batman and The Incredible Hulk. And as great as those crime fighters are, they’re also a reminder that when it comes to superhero movies, no women need apply  – this is man country.

New York Times film critic Manohla Dargis recently opined on the lack of women heroes and women— period — in today's big budget blockbusters. Could this be the realization of Warner Brothers exec Jeff Robinov's decree that the studio would not make any more movies with female leads? Dargis thinks so:

The Witchblade Movie: Who’s Sharp Enough to Play Sara?

Jennifer Garner

-- the linster from AfterEllen.com

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me a dozen times, shame on you, again —  especially if you’re a production company that has sucked me in time after time with the promise of a great, comic-based female action hero movie or TV series. Case in point: Elektra.

Jennifer Garner as Elektra, for all her tight, skimpy outfits, awesome abs and ass-kicking goodness, was not the Elektra of comic books. She was more like Elektra on Xanax. Sure, I watch the movie every time it’s on, but I’m superficial that way.

Catwoman was even worse — so bad that I haven’t watched it more than once, despite the presence of Halle Berry in this outfit.

Five Observations About Battlestar Galactica

-- Malinda Lo from AfterEllen.com

Last week's Battlestar Galactica episode, "Faith," rocked the house. This whole season, though, has been incredible, delving into complex, challenging issues such as religion, mortality and politics. This is not TV lite, therefore I rarely watch it on Friday nights at 10 p.m., since by then my brain is fried from the previous week's work and I can't concentrate with the appropriate amount of attention.

So, after watching "Faith" on DVR delay, I have a few observations to share with you about this most recent episode of BSG. (Please note: No attempt at synopsis has been made; for a synopsis, go here. This post is pure critique and conjecture.)

1. Starbuck has a fan base in the BSG world, too.

The Top Three Battle It Out on Idol

-- carolinagrrrl from AfterEllen.com

It’s do-or-die time on American Idol, and I can happily say that Syesha Mercado is still alive and kicking.  While most Idol "experts" (and even some judges) will tell you that the finals should come down to a battle of the two Davids, I've been hoping for a small miracle that would allow Syesha to strut her stuff into the finals. Last night she may have gotten her opportunity.

The show was split up into three pseudo-rounds: In the first round, songs were chosen by a judge, in the second the contestants chose their own songs, and lastly the producers made selections.

Donnie Darko: Part Dos?

-- Trish Bendix from AfterEllen.com

Whether you loved it and didn’t understand it, or hated it but claim to “get it” all, the film Donnie Darko is undeniably a cult classic. The 2001 indie film starring Jena Malone and both Gyllenhaals focused on the lead character’s existential crisis involving a bunny rabbit and his untimely death. It also featured cameos from Patrick Swayze and Drew Barrymore and had a rocking '80s soundtrack. Why mess with perfection? The director Richard Kelly did not want to — and still doesn’t, which is why he wants no association with the film’s upcoming sequel, S. Darko.

The new film stars Daveigh Chase (Big Love), who played Donnie’s young sister, Samatha, in the original film.

I Want to Believe in The New X-Files Trailer

-- Dorothy Snarker from AfterEllen.com

I want to believe … in the new X-Files movie. As a fan since the early '90s (Hey, remember those? Good times.), I watched nearly religiously until 1998 when something funny happened. I went to see The X-Files movies. While I liked the film, it was my jump-the-shark moment. Afterward, I felt like all the twists and turns in its convoluted conspiracy were too much come-on, not enough pay-off.

So now, with the new The X-Files: I Want to Believe opening July 25, I'm not sure whether that old paranormal magic will work on me again. Can Scully and Mulder make me believe, one last time?

I wasn't sure. And then I saw the trailer today. (If you don't like squinting, watch it on this Web site and click on "View High Res.")

The Future of Buffy Is in The Cards

-- the linster from AfterEllen.com

Being the curious type, occasionally I go to psychic fairs and have my cards read or find out what my cats are thinking or let someone intuit my aura. OK, I'm not sure what that means, but I get a nice bluish-green printout and assurances that I'm "in a good place," so I figure that's worth $10 now and then.

As a result, friends tend to email me with news from the woo-woo world, whether interesting or weird or just plain outrageous. But I have to say the best thing I've received lately came from a tarot fan with the note, "I think a hot woman is in your future."

Yes, that's exactly who you think it is. The card is part of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer tarot, which Dark Horse Comics announced at  New York Comic Con. Paul Lee, longtime cover artist for Buffy comics, is designing the deck with tarot guru Rachel Pollack. Pollack, who's been a Buffy fan for years, also is writing the deck's guidebook, which will explain how the cards fit into the Buffyverse.

Twilight Teaser Trailer Sees Daylight

-- Dorothy Snarker from AfterEllen.com

I've always had a bit of a thing for vampires. They're immortal. They're dangerous. They're night owls. Now, my vampire thing doesn't extend to putting on pointy teeth or biting the unsuspecting (well, not unless they ask). And I live in California, so I clearly love the sun. Still, I've watched way more than my fair share of sucky vampire movies. Which is why I was a little surprised I hadn't clued into Twilight sooner.

You can see why I might have missed the best-selling young-adult book series by Stephenie Meyer. Harry Potter notwithstanding, it's simply the wrong age bracket. While I'd heard chatter both on AfterEllen.com and elsewhere about the film, I hadn't paid close attention. I had my teenage vampire movie, thank you very much. It was called Lost Boys. But then, well, then I saw the teaser trailer.

Idol Top Four Rock Out

-- carolinagrrrl from AfterEllen.com

And then there was one — one female that is. Brooke White left us last week, leaving Syesha Mercado as the only female remaining on American Idol for Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame week.

I have to say, if someone had told me that the last girl standing would be Syesha, I would have told them they were crazier than Paula Abdul. And then I would have been wrong. It goes to show you how much I know.

Last night, contestants chose songs from the Hall's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll, and in the wake of Paula-gate, the judges went back to their normal format of critiquing them after each performance. It's too bad, really. Last week was so entertaining.

Which Summer Blockbuster Will You Line up For?

-- Mariana from AfterEllen.com

Yes, summer doesn't officially begin until June 21, but the folks in Hollywood like to start things off early, so the summer blockbusters season is officially beginning. Last year, movies like Spider-Man 3, Shrek the Third, Transformers, Ocean's 13 (and many others) took a lot of people to the movies, with total ticket sales amounting to almost $10 billion. This year, the grand total may not be that much, but with a little help from the following movies, it's likely to come  close.

Here are the blockbusters you should watch out for, starting this week:

Speed Racer (May 9)

No More Men in Trees for Anne Heche

-- Malinda Lofrom AfterEllen.com

So remember that TV show about a bunch of quirky but lovable romantics living in Alaska, who approach the ups and downs of life and love with an affable sense of humor? No, I'm not talking about the long-dormant Northern Exposure; I'm talking about ABC's Men in Trees, starring Anne Heche.

Earlier this week, TV Guide's Michael Ausiello reported that ABC has officially canceled the series, which suffered from oft-shifting time slots. It has aired on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, at various times, over the course of its two seasons since it premiered in September 2006. It was also pulled from ABC's prime-time schedule several times (once to make room for October Road, and more recently due to the WGA strike), leaving large gaps between new episodes.

SHE MADE ME WATCH THIS! Women's Sports Movies

This episode of SMMWT! is all about women in sports movies! The ones we like, anyway...

Not included? The recent soccer movie Gracie (kinda disappointing), Million Dollar Baby (too depressing), and lots of ice skating movies (whole 'nother genre). Plus probably whatever movie is your favorite, which I'm sure you'll let us know in the comments.

You'll also learn how Lori met one of her tennis idols, why you'll never catch her on a surf board, and what  movie the Chariots of Fire theme song makes me think of (hint: Wally World!).

Voting for AfterElton & AfterEllen Hot 100 Celebrities Begins!

Gayhot100s

Don't keep these poor celebrities in suspense any longer! They're (maybe not so) secretly dying to know who the gays and lesbians are sweating over. We are the taste-makers, after all.

AfterEllen.com and AfterElton.com are both gearing up for their second annual Hot 100 lists, as chosen by you gay blog-junkies. Voting has begun and will stay open until May 15; the sites will publish the results June 2. Last year's lists were pretty crazy: Tina Fey even gushed about her spot on AfterEllen.com's list on Conan O'Brien.

I didn't actually vote for AfterEllen.com's hot women - since I'm not a lesbian, and all - but I'd love me some Natalie Portman, some Jackie Warner, maybe some Sarah Silverman... I'm sure Tina Fey will knock out anyone and everyone, though. Last year, Leisha Haley from The L Word won, followed with Angelina Jolie and then with Kate Winslet. Not bad ...

But I did vote for my top 10 hottest guys on AfterElton.com - so check out my picks after the jump (only two are gay, though ...).

TV Guide's Sexiest Stars: Who's on Top?

-- the linster from AfterEllen.com

I watch Ghost Whisperer and I'm not ashamed to admit it. OK, a little embarrassed, maybe, but we all have our guilty pleasures. And even though Jennifer Love Hewitt is, at times, a bit too earnest for me, I can think of many reasons why she tops TV Guide 's "Sexiest Stars" list this year. Here are two.

What? I'm talking about her eyes. Hewitt might not be No. 1 on my list — at least not while Tina Fey is on TV — but I am tickled that she can flaunt her sexy status to the paps that trashed her for looking less-than-perfect in a bikini last year. Somehow, the fact that she didn't need to be on the list to know she's sexy makes her topping it even better.

Meet The Supergirlfriends of Summer

-- Dorothy Snarker from AfterEllen.com

They say behind every great man is a great woman. While we AfterEllen.commers might take issue with that first gender, the saying definitely holds true in the to big-budget superhero movies coming soon to a theater near you. In fact, USA Today recently interviewed the trio of Gwyneth Paltrow, Liv Tyler and Maggie Gyllenhaal, or — as I like to call them — the supergirlfriends of summer.

Feist Rocks The Colbert Report

First, a disclaimer. The official Feist idolator (I hope that's an actual word) around here was the fondly missed scribegrrrl, as you might remember. Obviously, these are very big shoes to fill, but I'll give it my best shot:  I. Love. Feist. Love, love, love. Looove.

Want proof? She's coming to my neck of the woods on June 11 and I have had the ticket for months. And I can hardly keep myself from running to the venue right now and sleeping there to get a front row seat. The only reason I don't do that? I have to blog for AfterEllen.com, obviously! Well, and I'm sane too. (Also, I'm going to a Cat Power concert on May 26, so I'm sleeping there first.)

Paula’s Omnipotence Outshines Idols

Before I get into the mayhem that was last night’s show, I would like to first lament the unfortunate and untimely loss of Carly Smithson. I admittedly didn’t see that one coming. But, such is the life of an Idol fan.

Plus, I can always find solace in the knowledge that she  will certainly be putting out a record of some sort within the next year or so. And I have faith that this one has to be better than her first one.

Now, let’s get to the task at hand. Last night’s American Idol can best be summed up by quoting Simon Cowell: “This is officially the strangest show we’ve ever done.”

Madonna Disappoints, But Mariah & Robyn Do Not

I have to admit that I've been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Madonna's latest album, Hard Candy, but after downloading it on Tuesday, boy was I disappointed. The reviews have been almost across-the-board positive — or at least thoughtful, referencing Madonna's influence and stature in the pop culture world — but I found myself fast-forwarding through repetitive choruses ("get stupid get stupid get stupid" — argh! — on "Give It 2 Me") and, frankly, not quite getting the album.

SHE MADE ME WATCH THIS! Vlog: Women in Action Movies

Gearing up for the summer action movies, Lori and I list our favorite female action heroes of all time, from Bridget Fonda in Point of No Return (1993) to  Halle Berry in Die Another Day (2002) to Michelle Yeoh in three movies, including the upcoming Mummy one.

Along the way, we lament the lack of non-martial arts roles for Asian American actresses, debate whether Harry Potter's Hermione can properly be considered an "action hero," and argue over the value of women in Bond movies.

Angie Harmon is so modest that she won't get pictures developed of her and her husband skinny-dipping – she doesn't want the photo lab folks to see them.

Three months, to the day, since our last Mandy and Marc madness. I think it’s safe to say, we’re all ready for Betty, wouldn’t you? Ugly Betty returns to the air tonight with its first post-strike episodes, and not a moment too soon.

The campiest show on television is back for five all new episodes. The series will pick up on Betty’s 24th birthday. What can we expect? Well, since this season has already seen a death, near-death, near-wedding, baby mama drama, baby daddy drama, artificial insemination, amnesia and Posh Spice, I’d say just more of the same old, same old.

Universe to Rachel Dratch: We Love You

Racheldratch

-- Dorothy Snarker from AfterEllen.com

Ask and ye shall receive. Or, in Rachel Dratch's case, beg a little and ye shall be gainfully employed again. After she told New York magazine earlier this month that she was "not doing much" and "ready for a job," the out-of-work Saturday Night Live alum got an emphatic answer from the universe.

Dratch has just been cast in the comedic play Scramble! at the Westport County Playhouse, a historic Connecticut theater revived by Paul Newman and his wife, Joanne Woodward. She will appear in the production in July. Earlier this week she flew to Los Angeles to shoot a pilot for a new, as yet unnamed, TV series.

Meet All the Dolls in Eliza Dushku’s Dollhouse

Dollhouseelizadushku

-- Dorothy Snarker from AfterEllen.com

Eliza Dushku finally has all her new playmates for her Dollhouse. The principals and recurring roles have been cast for Joss Whedon's ambitious return to television. They include a familiar face from the Buffyverse, as well as lots of new additions. As if that wasn't enough, critics have gotten their first look at the pilot script for the identity implanting/erasing sci-fi series, and the reviews are pretty much the definition of glowing.

The series follows the burgeoning awareness of Eliza's character Echo, one of a house full of living dolls who are imprinted with personality packages — from memories to physical abilities and more — for assignments. While we imaged a dream cast when the roles were first revealed back in March, the actual cast looks pretty impressive. First, returning under Whedon's wing is Amy Acker, aka Fred from Angel. Amy will play the recurring role of Dr. Claire Saunders, the woman who looks after the physical well-being of the dolls.

When I first saw this headline, "Emma Watson replaces 'old' Johansson," my first thought was that I was about to get my feminist on in a major way. I mean, is this what we've come to in Hollywood? Scarlett Johansson, at the age of 23, is considered too old to star in a romance?

As it turns out, though, the casting change is at least a bit better justified than I originally thought. The film in which Watson is now set to star is called Napoleon and Betsy, and the role she will play is based on a real-life figure.

9021-LESBO

Brandon90210

-- Mollie Mullett from AfterEllen.com

If you were alive in the 1990s, then you are aware of the ever-popular show Beverly Hills, 90210, about trendy high schoolers from the chic Beverly Hills zip code who never seemed to graduate. OK, they did graduate, but it took a really long time.

The CW network owns the rights to create a new version of the 90210 series, but the project still hasn't been greenlit.  I'm not sure why they're delaying  this brilliant piece of magic.

As an avid fan of the original show, I sat in my bedroom at night and pictured myself as the cool, rebellious Luke Perry, aka Dylan McKay (what a fabulous and truly believable character name), but now in retrospect I was really Nat from the Peach Pit. Beverly Hills, 90210 changed me, as it changed so many other teens wearing hypercolor shirts and MC Hammer pants.

Although there is no replacing the lovely and extremely talented Tori Spelling, I have decided I want to do my own casting for the lesbian version of 90210, and it would go something like this:

The Men "Carey" the Women on American Idol

If you follow American Idol even half as close as I do, then two things must be true: you have a lot of free time, and you are already aware how much the men have been overshadowing the women this season. I have been trying to avoid talking about the guys too much because, frankly, I don't want any of them to win. But, alas, it seems unavoidable this week.

Idol has now endured its first true “ shock ” elimination as Michael Johns left the competition last week. But, I have a problem with the use of that word whenever someone undeserving receives the least votes. Let's face it, folks, all but one contestant will eventually be eliminated; there is no “shock” value in that fact. Michael, as good as he was, was not going to be this season's Idol, so I don't think a week or two's difference here or there in the elimination process makes much of a difference.

The Worst Reality on Television

Americasnexttopmodel

-- Trish Bendix from AfterEllen.com

Why is everyone so ashamed of admitting they like reality television (myself included)? Honestly, I have probably seen more episodes of America's Next Top Model than I have of Law & Order: SVU, yet the latter is the only one showing up in my "favorite television shows" on MySpace or Facebook. (And if I can admit I'm on both of those, why is it so hard to profess my love for Rock of Love?)

There are some really great reality shows, such as Project Runway, Work Out,  the two I mentioned above, and several others. What ruins it for us all — all of us closeted reality TV fans — are the ridiculously embarrassing shows. Not the ones that are so bad they're good (speaking of, I really can't wait for Living Lohan on E!). You know the awful ones I'm talking about — the ones that make you embarrassed of not only reality but human interaction.

Come on, Get Happy: Songs From The '80s

Girlsjustwanttohavefun

-- Ace from AfterEllen.com

OK, "Come on, Get Happy" — otherwise known as the Partridge Family Theme Song — is from the '70s, not the '80s. But if you were listening to music in the 80s, you have to admit that a lot of it was up-tempo, pretty happy stuff. With that in mind, several months ago, the Stuck in the '80s blog asked readers to submit the happiest songs of the '80s. The readers submitted their suggestions and the site winnowed them down to the 80 happiest songs of the 1980s.

I was an adolescent in the '80s, so I'm reasonably familiar with the music of the decade. Consequently, some of the songs that made the list perplex me. For example, I certainly like No. 32 "Jenny 867-5309" (Tommy Tutone) but I don't know that I'd call this song about obsession with a stranger happy. And I probably wouldn't include Cheap Trick's similarly themed "She's Tight" (No. 25). I might be OK with the inclusion of Irene Cara's "What a Feeling" (No. 21) if I didn't associate it with my grandfather's death. But I definitely cannot see the Violent Femmes' "Blister in the Sun" in the top 10. I mean, it's a great song, but not the 10th happiest song of the 1980s.

The Edge of Love Gets a Release Date

Edgeofheaven

-- browne from AfterEllen.com

One of my most anticipated movies of 2008 now has a U.K. release date. The Edge of Love — a biopic about the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, starring Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller and scripted by Knightley's mother, Sharman Macdonald — will be the opening night film at the Edinburgh International Film Festival on June 18. It will open in London two days later, and then across the U.K. June 27.

Why all this anticipation, I hear you ask? Well, if for no other reason, I'd be excited by this movie as a chance to see two actresses I really like together on-screen. With apologies to those people — and I know there are quite a lot of them, especially people from Pittsburgh — who find Sienna Miller madly annoying, I actually think that she's quite a good actress. And, no, it doesn't hurt that she looks like she does. (It doesn't hurt that Keira Knightley looks like she does, either.)

Björk is not on my iPod.

Don't misunderstand. I think Björk is brilliant. And she's weird — something I value highly, as a fellow weirdo. But her music is an experience, not something to put on the mp3 player to help you keep your workout rhythm. When I play Björk, I listen.
