AfterElton Briefs: Brett Claywell Runs For HIV/AIDS, Did Tim Gunn Go Too Far, and GLSEN's School Climate Survey

Plus George Michael gets jail time, Aiden James gives away music, and did Will.i.am sing the next gay pride anthem on Sesame Street?

  • Above you can see Lady Gaga at the airport, with her new tattoo, a unicorn with a ribbon around its horn that has the title of her new album, "Born This Way."

  • I find it increasingly difficult to believe that this entire Lady Gaga DADT repeal effort — her SLDN escorts, her Twitter campaign and the response from Senator Harry Reid — wasn't an intricately orchestrated piece of theater. We need more of this in our politics.

  • Brett Claywell broke Twitter silence to announce he's running the New York City Marathon to raise money for Grassroots Soccer, an organization that does HIV/AIDS outreach in Africa via soccer. He's looking for sponsors for $25 for a single African youth to $1000 for an entire classroom.

  • Tomorrow, Oprah will be revisiting one of her most important shows. On November 16, 1987, she came to Williamson, WV after an HIV-infected Michael Sisco developed AIDS and then gone swimming in the municipal pool. The mayor had the pool closed and drained in response. The emotional episode sparked a nationwide debate on HIV/AIDS transmission and helped increase understanding at a time of great fear and misinformation. Oprah returns to Williamson to talk with Sisco's family and the community 23 years later. Michael Sisco passed away in 1994.
  • I owned this same sweater back then. We probably shopped at the same store.

  • The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) released their 2009 National School Climate Survey today, and it shows 9 in 10 GLBT students experience harassment in school. Good Morning America touched on this study this morning in a piece on teenage depression, and gave parents some tools and advice. Robin Roberts was really moved by the study.

  • Meanwhile, in Greensburg, IN, a 15-year-old student who was repeatedly bullied and called a "fag" by classmates took his own life. His classmate said the kids were relentless, explaining "They said stuff like 'you're like a piece of crap' and 'you don't
  • deserve to live.' Different things like that. Talked about how he was

    gay or whatever."

  • George Michael was sentenced to eight weeks in prison for driving while drugged today. He'll spend four weeks in jail, and four on parole.

  • Hot bearded songster Aiden James has made his single "On My Sleeve" available for his fans to download.

  • In the latest edition of Ask the Experts, we hear how you can find gay and lesbians if you live in a small rural town. It turns out places like AfterElton.com are a great place to start.

  • Everyone's favorite naughty uncle, John Waters wants to ban heterosexual divorce as part of our marriage equality efforts. He has a point, because then we wouldn't be a "threat" to an unbreakable institution.

  • Models and designers are cowering in fear of Anna Wintour even more than normal. They think Tim Gunn shouldn't have baited the prickly diva in his book, and don't want to be associated with him. They think Tim is about to be blackballed from all the fabulous parties.

  • Yesterday I neglected to report that A&E's Paranormal State host Ryan Buell came out as bisexual in his new book. Welcome to the gayborhood, your muffin basket is on the way!

  • Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan has been reviewing and recusing herself from any case coming before the court that she wrote and help strategize a brief for the government as Solicitor General. As of yet, this hasn't included any cases in which gay rights may come up, but if Witt vs. U.S. came before the court, it could go via the obvious conservative ideological leanings of the justices. In other vital cases, such as Gill vs. Office of Personnel Management, Kagan's impact is less clear.

  • This interactive Gossip Girl hookup chart includes out character Eric and his boyfriends in in this web that would make the cast of The Bachelor Pad blush. It even notes that Asher Hornsby dated Jenny before he dated Eric. But I'm a little disturbed at "Eric's most recent fella, Elliot, is, dangerously, a bisexual."

  • Will.i.am debuted a new song "What I Am" on Sesame Street. While the obvious audience is small kids learning a sense of self, listening to it as a gay man, I felt like it was one lip-dub video on Fire Island from being a gay pride anthem.

  • Part of me is disturbed that in the biennial news consumption survey by the Pew Research Center for People & Press, The Daily Show and The Colbert Report are measured right next to CNN, New York Times, NPR, or the Wall Street Journal. But the unsurprising news is:
  • By contrast, supporters of gay rights make up large shares of regular

New York Times readers, viewers of the Colbert Report and NPR listeners.

Several ideologically divergent news audiences – including Wall Street

Journal readers and viewers of the Colbert Report and Glenn Beck show –

include larger-than-average percentages of self-described libertarians.
