Alabama Minister Sentenced To Jail For Officiating A Same-Sex Wedding

Anne DiPrizio, a non-denominational Alabama minister, has been handed a 30-day jai sentence and $250 fine for officiating a wedding between women in February.

DiPrizio was found guilty despite the fact that the state's ban on marriage equality was ruled unconstitutional by U.S. District Court Judge Callie V. Granade in January.

DiPrizio tried to marry the couple at the Autuga County Probate Office where they had received a marriage license only minutes before. But Judge Al Booth banned same-sex ceremonies from the courthouse the day before, and ordered her arrest on disorderly conduct charges.

Despite DiPrizio hardly being a threat, the county sent in six deputies to arrest her.

Fortunately, her sentence was suspended for six months. "I'm glad this is over and we can put this behind us," DiPrizio said afterwards.

Meanwhile, as the reality of federal marriage equality looms closer, the Alabama Legislature is trying to do away with marriage licenses altogether.
