Meet the Fierce Queens Who Will Be Competing in Alaska’s New Drag Pageant

Alaska sure knows how to pick 'em!

Alaska’s got a tiny little question to ask ya: Are you ready to meet the best drag performers in the whole wide world?

A few weeks ago, the RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Season 2 winner put down her cup of piping hot tea long enough to announce a new pageant: Drag Queen of the Year, which will crown the best drag performer on earth.

“Judged upon the criteria of presence, energy, nuance, integrity and stunningness, this is a pageant for everyone,” Alaska said in a statement about the event. “Drag queens, drag kings, Trans artists, hyper queens, bio queens, AFAB queens are all welcome to participate. From first time performers to established pageant powerhouses, all are invited to compete for this coveted title.”

Now the Queen of Snakes has selected the eight contestants who will compete in the competition and honey, Alaska sure knows how to pick 'em!

“The Anonymous Drag Elders had a huge task in front of them sorting through all the applicants and finally narrowing it down to eight dynamic contestants," said Alaska. "These performers represent the qualities of Presence, Energy, Nuance, Integrity, and Stunningness that this competition stands for and I can’t wait to see what they bring to the stage!”

The event will take place on Sunday, May 26, during the weekend of RuPaul’s DragCon L.A., tickets are available now, and until then meet the queens below.

Abhora - Miami, Florida

In their own words: “What makes me different than other drag queens is that I am actively trying to destroy ‘drag.’”

Sabbyiana - Montebello, California

In their own words: “I’m a gay, Latina, professional dancing queen from Montebello. I’m basically the Gloria Anzaldua of drag.”

Aurora Sexton - Los Angeles, California

In their own words: “What makes me different than most drag queens is that I am a transgender artist, housing 2,387,547 personalities in my head.”

Kat Sass - Chicago, Illinois

In their own words: “I think the first thing people notice is the sheer scale and size of my work. For example, I have a gown called the 'pussy dress' and it weighs 51 pounds and is made with 1,200 yards of tulle and organza. I wanted to have the biggest pussy in the world! So many of my costumes are absolutely massive in scale and concept. I think another thing that separates me out quite a bit is that I'm about to be the first AFAB drag queen to perform drag on National Television. I got cast on Fox's Proven Innocent as a drag queen and I perform drag on the show! I have also been in two movies as Kat Sass — Signature Move which is on Amazon Prime and Two in the Bush which is currently on the festival circuit.”

Calypso Jete - Los Angeles, California

In their own words: “My drag is a platform for youth to inspire and teach through my storytelling, productions and use of my body to let them bring their imagination to life and have fun while doing something you have a passion for. I incorporate it into my day job (working at a charter high school) where I help the kids build confidence, tolerance and equality through dance.”

Gigi Monroe - Juneau, Alaska

In their own words: “I'm probably the most versatile queen in the world. A chameleon does not even begin to describe my drag abilities. I can do the character illusion thing, the glamour thing, the edgy rock and roll thing, the bizarre thing, the drag dancer thing, the classy hostess thing, the model, the performer, the public speaker... whatever the venue and audience call for, I can deliver.”

Lyle - Los Angeles, California

In their own words: “I want compete in Drag Queen of the Year because ‘I'm here, I'm the body queen, I'm not padded.’ I'm J-ing your K. I think it’s time I compete in a competition like Drag Queen of the Year because it’s about time I share my art with the masses who I know would appreciate the way I see the world.”

Astrud Aurelia - Phoenix, Arizona

In their own words: “One thing that separates me from other drag artists is that I have a unique sphere of influences and am very under influenced by pop culture. This isn’t to say that I’m unaware of pop culture, but the art that excites me tends to exist in more subversive planes and places drag queens don’t immediately jump to in media, tending towards underground music, video games, fashion, comedy and personal icons. I grew up in the Phoenix hardcore punk scene, so I’m used to rowdy house shows, dingy coffee shops, and abandoned buildings as my home spaces. I went to an arts specializing high school, and after graduating spent three years at ASU studying jazz instrumental performance on drum set and upright bass. I incorporate all of these elements into my drag at times, and are a vital part of my identity as an artist.”

The fierce queen who wins will receive a crown, a sash, a bouquet of “very nice flowers,” and a cash prize of $10,000 (via PayPal).
