Alexis Michelle Hosting Benefit For Gay Couple Severely Injured In Car Accident

"Wicked" actor Jerad Bortz and husband Steven Skeels need your help.

New York's Broadway and drag communities will come together for a wickedly good deed at Heels on Wheels, an upcoming benefit for husbands Jerad Bortz and Steven Skeels.

Bortz and Skeels, partners for more than 16 years, had a tragic car accident in February that left Bortz paralyzed from the chest down, Playbill reports. He currently has limited movement of his arms and hands.

Bortz, expected to be wheelchair-bound for the rest of his life, was a member of the Broadway cast of Wicked for more than 12 years. He also performed on Broadway in Mamma Mia! and The Pirate Queen.

Skeels, a singer-songwriter and performer, suffered a severe concussion, whiplash, and bleeding on the brain.

RuPaul’s Drag Race season 9 contestant Alexis Michelle will host the Heels on Wheels benefit, sponsored by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

Special performers include former Wicked stars Shoshana Bean and Annaleigh Ashford, plus Breedlove and drag queens Shequida, Ariel Sinclair, Gusty Winds, and Davida Jones. Friends from the current casts of Wicked, Beautiful, and Kinky Boots will also participate.

All proceeds from the event will support Skeels and Bortz's ongoing medical costs, as well as the high expense of their new life together.

"Despite being the single most tragic event of our lives, it has most certainly been the single most beautiful experience in our lives," says Bortz in a video message to friends and family, expressing gratitude for the "army of support" that followed the accident.

So far almost $80,000 has been raised through the couple's YouCaring crowdfunding page.

"Daily, I’ve been making progress that even I’m surprised by," Bortz continues. "The therapies are intense and physically challenging in a way I’ve never experienced. But one thing I know for sure is that this is and will be a beautiful life."

"I somehow strangely know that this is a blessing and I’ve been set free, and I will live a richer and fuller life than I’ve ever dreamed."

Heels on Wheels, A Homecoming Celebration to Benefit Jerad Bortz and Steven Skeels will be held May 14 at Stage 48 in New York.
