"Alice" And "Company" Actress Beth Howland Dead At 74

RIP, Vera.

Beth Howland who was best known for playing the high-strung waitress Vera for nine seasons on the sitcom Alice, has died at the age of 74 from lung cancer.

Howland actually passed away on December 31, 2015, but her husband, Murphy Brown actor Charles Kimbrough only announced the news now, keeping with her wishes. “It was the Boston side of her personality coming out,” Mr. Kimbrough told The New York Times. “She didn’t want to make a fuss.”

Howland is most famous for her role on Alice, but she was also a Broadway stage actress who portrayed Amy, the reluctant bride-to-be in the 1970 original production of Stephen Sondheim's Company:

Howland was considered for the role of Vera on Alice after a Warner Bros. TV exec saw her in the Sondheim musical.

After Alice ended in 1985 Howland kept busy with small roles on TV series such as Murder, She Wrote, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch and The Tick.
